A July fire in Stoughton Wisconsin destroyed ten of thirteen large tobacco warehouses along with the St. Paul Depot and about twenty eight freight cars loaded with wheat and merchandise. Loss estimates range 500000 to 1 million dollars with about one third of Wisconsin's tobacco crop burned. The blaze, believed started by careless Fourth of July fireworks, displaced some five hundred workers and caused heavy uninsured or underinsured losses among Eastern buyers and local operators.
