A violent clash at St. Hedwig's Polish Catholic Church near Locust and Dexter streets left two dead and many wounded. Police arrested thirteen rioters, while a coroner planned inquest as tensions between priest supporters and opponents heightened after attempts on the pastor Lewandowski.
In Gowanas Bay two young men, John W. Douglass of Catskill and Walter Wingate of Camden, rowed two miles. Wingate finished in 16 minutes 28 seconds, Douglass half a length behind. Miss Douglass, a law student and niece of a Poughkeepsie Eastern Star member, accepted Douglass as affianced.
A homing pigeon held at the signal service office in New Orleans was liberated at 7 20 AM by Sergeant Herrman in the presence of onlookers. The bird’s direct 1130 mile flight to Keyport New Jersey began with a northerly dash, paused briefly, then resumed and vanished one minute five seconds after release in favorable weather with a southwest wind. It was fed hemp seed and water before departure. Herrman expects it to reach Keyport by Tuesday morning.
M Rochefort says Egypt reports Olivier Pain was killed after leaving Debbeh aboard camels, slain about a fortnight from Cairo by Arabs paid by Col Schmid of the Egyptian service to seize papers Pain carried from Khartoum. Belief grows he was an agent of the English when he died. Rochefort promotes a theatrical benefit for Pain’s family.
MapRID June 28 cholera totals list Murcia city 52 new cases and 3 deaths, Murcia province 155 cases and 76 deaths, Castellon de la Plana 6 cases and 6 deaths, Saathor-qoetsers 151 cases and 51 deaths, Valencia province 614 cases and 306 deaths, Alicante 145 cases and 41 deaths, other places 70 cases and 28 deaths. By noon today Alicante had 39 new cases and 27 deaths, other places 26 new cases and 22 deaths.
During a thunder storm in Gananoque Ontario a lightning bolt struck the Presbyterian Church spire and shattered a front door. John McNaughton, in the vestibule, was knocked unconscious while ladies fainted and the congregation panicked. All escaped injury.
The Commissioner of the General Land Office declined to grant patents on 320,000 acres already selected for the Oregon and California Railroad Company and refused approval to proceed with selections for up to 1 million more under the lapsed land grant in Oregon and California.
Louisville dispatch reports Tolliver and Martin factions clash in Bowen County. Marshall Toliver of Morehead wounds Sheriff-elect Humphrey while a man named Leyburn is killed. Humphrey is fatally wounded.

Murcia and Castellon de la Plana show additional totals as pro vince wide figures rise with Alicante reporting eight new cases and forty deaths. London reports Khalifa Pasha travels to Cairo carrying Mahdi letters to the Khedive. The Mahdi sends funds to the Emir of Shendy to fund a divinity school for 250 new believers and ransom Christian prisoners. Washington June 26 Plans and specifications for four new steel cruisers were received at the Navy Department. Secretary Whitney set July 15 as the submission deadline with plans from the Bureau of Construction and Bureau of Steam Engineering. Naval officers and shipbuilders may offer proposals while Mintonye of Brooklyn Navy Yard will supply plans for three hulls. The first ship, about 1.5 million dollars, spans 356 by 48 feet, 18 knots, armed with 97 guns and housing around 400 crew. A second vessel measures 825 by 46 with a heavy battery. the third is 225 by 36 with fourteen guns. Some impractical proposals include a vessel that floats atop water and midair sails. Whitney favors proven foreign cruiser models enhanced by American builders. Admiral Porter has drafted a versatile 250-foot model serving as ram, torpedo boat, and gunboat with high speed potential.
Washington June 6 The school for seamen in the improved armament of modern vessels will open July 1 at the Navy yard with twenty sailors. A Newport class of twenty will start August 1 for six months of torpedo instruction. After a year both groups will reform, and sailors will return to ships as teachers. Continuous service enlistment required.
Washington June 26 It is expected that the West Point graduates will be assigned to regiments upon Secretary Endicot’s return next week The academy produced thirty nine graduates with fifty four officer vacancies in cavalry artillery infantry and the corps Non commissioned officers who passed boards will be assigned after twelve are ordered before boards Six are believed to have passed leaving nine vacancies to be filled The question is whether civilians will fill vacancies or they remain until the next class graduates with the President likely appointing civilians and Congress providing for a prospective graduate
In New York on June 29 the trial of Englishwoman Mrs. Yseult Dudley for shooting Jeremiah ODonovan Rossa opened. Rossa testified amid interruptions from Dudley who taunted him about his name and identity. She shouted insults and mocked his claims, while he described the shooting and receipt dispute. The scene drew detectives, with Rossa and his ally Patrick Joyce present as the courtroom buzzed with hostilities.
June reports mark a spreading cholera outbreak with lower virulence. Grao and nearby Cabaness face alarming mortality, including an English sailor aboard the Ross en route to Bilbao. Avupsourn June 29 James D Fish of the Marine Bank was today placed in the regular prison course. Attendants bathed him cropped his hair shaved his beard and clothed him in stripes. He is placed in a standard cell among hundreds awaiting activity in the prison.
Olaf Olsen of Arendal Norway a cabin boy aboard the bark Nat from Cienfuegos to Philadelphia died at Lewes hospital of yellow fever. A fellow sailor from the same ship is convalescing. Lewes Board of Health issued strict resolutions governing communication with hospital staff and all persons tied to the infected vessel.
Cairo reports General Wolseley has learned Olivier Pain, the French renegade adviser to El Mahdi during the Sudan campaign, died of fever in Upper Egypt. Paris confirms the death.
Chicago June 28 Mary O Shaughnessy eighty three threw herself in front of an outgoing Baltimore and Ohio passenger train at Thirty ninth street. She was fatally maimed and died at once, the incident causing a halt in traffic for several minutes while investigators examined the scene.
The Durst family near Plymouth Wisconsin were exposed to arsenic laced cake on Wednesday night. A two year old died and three others are in critical condition as investigators review the incident and determine source and motive.
A building housing a brewery, saloon, and residence burned early this morning in Beaver Dam Wisconsin. Three children suffocated by smoke and burned to death. Property loss estimated under $5,000. Fire officials investigate the cause.
Washington June 25 Yesterday's Baltimore market receipts included eighty eight bushels of new wheat two are from Lancaster County Virginia at two dollars per bushel. Another forty four bushels from Middlesex County Virginia were inferior and garlicy selling at 1.40 to 1.50. Last year's first new wheat arrived June 20 and sold for 1.50.
Lancaster, June 29 report that William Robinson fourteen and a ten year old boy drowned yesterday afternoon while swimming at Hillard's mill dam in Salisbury Township. Robinson died in an effort to save the younger lad.
In Nashville Indiana a mill worker was struck by a seventeen year locust last Thursday near a saw-mill. He is in critical condition and gravely injured as doctors treat his life threatening wounds.
In Rosinson Illinois on June 26 a car driven by Mrs William Updyke backed off a bridge during a funeral procession. The incident fatally wounded Mrs Updyke and seriously bruised Mrs James Reddles and Miss Maude Updyke.
A Greenville Tennessee special reports the jury deliberated about thirty hours before returning a verdict of not guilty for H. Johnson in the King Major Henry case. The courtroom erupted in enthusiasm as the decision was announced at 8 o clock this morning.
Buffalo police report a city population of 202 318 from the latest census. The 1880 tenth U S Census recorded a total population of a prior figure.
Prof. M. King of Springfield has been appointed Superintendent of the Seed Department by the Commissioner of Agriculture. The appointment takes effect July 1. King's selection follows a notice from Washington dated June 27.
Mrs Mollie Taylor, described as temporarily insane, leaped from a third floor window at the corner of Eighth and Baymiller streets in Cincinnati today and was instantly killed.
