City editor reports a house fire in Fern City near here that killed four Ross children aged 8 and younger. The mother had left briefly on an errand and returned to find the upper floors engulfed, preventing rescue. authorities suspect the children started the blaze while playing.
London reports a remarkable funeral from Hawes North Yorkshire for J S Broderick a wealthy Epicurean follower who believed in soul migration. He requested no ministers or religious rites and was buried on his own hilltop estate after blasting rock to forty feet below the surface despite twelve foot snow drifts blocking the road for mourners.

Mrs Voorhees widow of Senator Voorhees died at their Washington residence at 5 o clock this forenoon from acute peritonitis after a belladonna of congestive chills and bowel inflammation. The remains will be taken to Terre Haute Indiana tonight for funeral services there on Sunday.
The Morgan levee, open since 1874 and one of the state's largest, is finished today. It runs a mile and three-quarters, rises as high as twenty five feet, and contains 270000 cubic yards of earth.

Henry M. Stanley began his journey to Egypt on January 21. He will travel first to Brindial and then to Suez. A large crowd of reporters and dignitaries gathered at the railway station to witness his departure. In response to a reporter's question he said he would return as soon as he can and sent kind regards to friends in America, Belgium and England.
Washington representative Townshend introduced a bill to provide a joint celebration by the sixteen American republics in 1889, honoring the centennial of the United States Constitution.
Vienna reports that newly published Landsturm regulations bar most exemptions, allowing only blindness deafness dumbness and lameness to excuse service. Drafts will fill gaps in regular army and navy reserves, a move that surprised the country with its sweeping severity.

In Kershaw County Columbia Jan 21 a house fire destroyed Calvin Bass's home. Bass's wife, ill in bed, and their two small children perished. Bass is suspected of setting the blaze.
Belvidere New Jersey January 24 1900 Janitor Titus of the Collegiate Institute was sentenced to be hanged on April 14 for the murder of a servant girl at the institute. Higher courts will be appealed to.
In Niagara Falls Ontario on January 23 two young girls were swept into a sewer and carried into the Niagara River. They were rescued with great difficulty and survived. Local authorities described the incident as dangerous and the girls were treated for exposure and shock.
Portsmouth report says three persons named Eitherly living in Eliot Missouri were poisoned by canned corn beef last night. The mother and daughter are not expected to live and the husband is in critical condition.
In Or Crrr Pa on January 24 the ice gorge below the city measures two miles long and fifteen feet high posing danger. An effort is underway to break the gorge with nitro glycerine to avert flooding.
Miss Van Zandt files for an injunction against a museum manager to stop displaying a wax likeness of her. The action aims to prevent the exhibit from being shown publicly in Chicago on Jan. 24.
In Central City Kentucky on January 23 a miner named Fortney working for Central Iron and Coal Company was struck by a descending cage. He suffered a broken leg head injuries and internal trauma. He died this morning.
