Washington dispatch reports a terrible wreck on the Baltimore and Ohio at Terra Cotta three miles from the city. Train No 66 from Frederick collided with an eight car dead head special, killing about 38 and injuring over 70, with fog hindering visibility. Edith had secured a New York divorce forbidding remarriage while she lived. McCaughtry says New York advisors claim a second divorce unnecessary, and he plans to withdraw the local petition.
The Ohio State Treasurer's annual report for the year ending November 15 shows strong finances with a total balance of 5.546 million across the general revenue, sinking, school, and university funds. General revenues rose by 610 thousand, deposits averaged 2.817 million in 75 banks at 2 percent interest, and gross receipts reached 13.074 million while expenditures totaled 9.328 million.
The post office department issued orders establishing 12 rural free delivery routes in Clermont county Ohio. Routes begin at Amelia three at Batavia one at Bethlehem five at Loveland one at Milford one at Moscow one at Richmond and two at Williamsburg.
Slippery rails and failed brakes caused trolley car No 1 to careen down the Price Hill incline. The derailed vehicle struck a telegraph pole and overturned. One man, William H Cumayn 53, died. Dozens injured were rushed to hospitals or homes. Ambulances responded to the scene.
Columbus Grove Ohio First National Bank of Leipsic to wind up its affairs and return the charter. The institution organized by farmers and business men will go out of business once all outstanding claims are paid due to lack of patronage.
Harry Jones, a colored convict sentenced to second degree murder in Hamilton County in 1898, received a Christmas pardon from Gov Harris. He served two years as the warden Gould's house boy and, though illiterate on arrival, is now educated. After chapel applause, Jones will stay in the city a few days before moving to Dayton for his headquarters.
The passenger steamer Lakeside under Capt Fox from the islands struck rocks at the Cedar Point jetty in heavy fog with passengers and freight aboard. The vessel was later released.
In Bellaire Ohio Melvin Cline six son of Mr and Mrs C D Cline of Dillies Bottom was playing on the floor near a large open fireplace when he stumbled and fell head first into the roaring fire and was seriously burned.
Thomas Fagin, staying at a Marion hotel, suddenly became insane after bedtime. In only his underwear he ran into the freezing street as the thermometer neared zero, pursued by locals and later captured.
A runaway pony trots into the dining room at Louis Mead Hall's Marion residence during a family dinner. Matthew McKins, age 9, attempted to control the animal but it charged across the room, stepping onto the dining table and shattering dishes as the family scattered.
