Nine dead and six fatally injured as an eastbound train derailed near Enderlin North Dakota. The accident occurred when a switch engine failed to clear the main track, causing a head on collision with the passenger train. Rescuers freed inmates as flames spread, eight bodies placed by the track, others taken to hospital or hotels. The train carried many homeward bound travelers for Christmas.
L B Hicks Edison Electric tunnel digger freed from 60 feet of debris after 15 days entombment 17 miles from Bakersfield. He was moved to a safer drift and will be rushed to the company hospital. five fellow workers perished in the cave in. Hicks is a Kentucky native.
President Roosevelt issued a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to donate funds for famine relief in China. He also said he would seek congressional authority to deploy government transport vessels to deliver food to the affected regions.

In Middletown Ohio a fire at the Rommel hotel left Earl Anderson dead. C N Powers the owner was found bound hand and foot and gagged in the cellar and rescued. Edward Lovener is jailed on suspicion of incendiary acts. Powers says two men including Judd Moore were warned away. The fire started from cinders in the cellar. loss about 10000 dollars.
A Springfield man, not named by the board, voluntarily paid 1300 cash for taxes missed by the assessor after selling his farm and investing the proceeds in city property. The board notes this is larger than usual for those overlooked by the assessor.
Dayton reports that Fayne Gilman is freed by order of Magistrate Wagner while Collins Gilman and Mrs Kate Gilman are bound over to the grand jury for the Dana Gilman homicide. Miss Fayne Gilman released. section nine of Ohio constitution cited on bail rights.
The Cleveland Electric Railway Co president Horace Andrews claimed bribery by a city councilman and ownership of Forest City stock. The grand jury found gossip fueled the charges with no evidence to substantiate the serious allegations after a thorough investigation.
The report to the state auditor shows Auditor Robert C. Wright drew twice the U.S. president’s pay under the old fee system, with total fees of 137,650.24 dollars and net salary of 113,265.18 dollars after 24,384.46 dollars in expenditures. The article notes Wright may retire as a wealthy man.
