Whitney Houston I Wanna Dance with Somebody review hopeful yet uneven
A well acted biopic that centers on Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston with Houston’s voice heard on key numbers via remixed original vocals. The film traces her rise from church choir to 2012 death, guided by Kasi Lemmons and with strong support from Clive Davis and Robyn Crawford. Ackie frames the life with light touch, but tensions between image and reality surface, while the music mostly carries the story through a 2 hour 20 minute runtime.
