Telegraph report notes accusations against Carlists for an attempted assassination of the Spanish king. Also includes apologies from the Consul-General Butler, arrival news of Lieut. In Madrid on July 22 detectives press investigations into an attempted assassination of Ama deus. Thirty Carlist leaders are arrested on suspicion of involvement and linked to General Prim's murder. They are confined awaiting trial as the city remains tranquil.
A string of violent incidents fills the night with deaths and injuries. Margaret Brown died from kicks after a dispute on Washington Street, while Patrick Dwyer was arrested. A man shot another on Lewis Street leaving a likely fatal wound to James Smith. Sixteen year old William Maloy stabbed John Lee in Molt Street, with Lee later pronounced fatally injured. Maloy was arrested drunk at home. The Herald notes political trends in North Carolina as the nation eyes fall elections. Baseball standings show Boston leading the pennant race with 45 games played. Some venues display conspicuous price lists with higher rates for nonwhite patrons and discounts for white customers. Prices shown include whisky 2 dollars, brandy 5 dollars, gin 2 dollars, mixed drinks 5 dollars, steak 2 dollars, chops 2 dollars, eggs 3 dollars, coffee 1 dollar, fish 2 dollars, raw tomatoes 50 cents. Wilmington reports William Lowery brother of Henry Berry Lowery was killed near Moss Neck yesterday morning by Robert Wishart younger brother of Col. F. M. Wishart. His body arrived in Lumberton on Saturday.
Columbus Ohio reports the Turners of the city are preparing for a grand national festival to be held in Columbus on August 24 25 and 26. The dispatch notes 384 emigrants passed west today and a carload of Chinamen was bound for Steubenville yesterday morning.

The Pittsburg Chronicle compares the debts and resources of Allegheny County and Philadelphia. It cites census estimates showing Allegheny County real and personal property at 350,180,70 and Philadelphia at 1,206,254,747. It argues Allegheny’s total debt is not over six and a half million dollars, while Philadelphia’s is about seven times larger, with roughly three and a half times the assessed property value.
Paul Peebles recounts Poe’s visit to John R Thompson at Southern Literary Messenger. Poe asked for five dollars and volunteered a short poem, Annabel Lee, which Thompson printed in the next Messenger issue. Thompson reportedly kept the autograph as a memento.

In New York at 63 Beekman Street a decayed body was found in a wooden deal box addressed to Farmer and Little. The corpse was identified as F F Blake late editor of the Galveston Bulletin. The box was returned from the Galveston steamer and placed in a Greenwood receiving vault until winter per relatives’ dispatch.
Captain William Ripley purchased a half interest in the steamer Mountain Belle and plans to refit it for local trade with Captain Macallister in command. Macallister also sold a quarter interest in the steamer Fanny Dugan to his brother the same day.
