Charles E Waggoner Dies A Leading Citizen

Charles E Waggoner a prominent business man for 36 years and a public spirited citizen died suddenly at his home on Friday September 3 after a period of heart trouble. Funeral services were held Sept 7 at 2 pm at the home and 2 30 pm at Diller Methodist church with Rev C Hoyt of Beatrice officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Home cemetery Diller. Large crowds attended the services.

Charles E Waggoner born Carlisle Pennsylvania 1876 died September 3 1943 at his home age sixty six long time Diller Nebraska resident and business leader He owned Furniture Hardware and Undertaking with his brother since 1907 served as Village Clerk member of the Diller School Board and Prairie Home Cemetery secretary treasurer He married Clare Robertson in 1904 and fathered Lieutenant Lynn L Waggoner now on sea duty in the Naval Reserve.

Diller School Opens with New Year Activities

The Diller school opened on Monday with track and basketball practice starting this afternoon. Enrollment shows 79 high school pupils and 114 overall. Junior and freshman transfers from Harbine add five juniors and one freshman. full student list to be published next week.

Large crowd attends Behrends sale on 80 acre farm

More than 400 gathered for a public sale of the Ben Behrends 80 acre farm southeast of town. The property with livestock and equipment brought 66 dollars per acre, selling to Arthur A. Harbine. Mr and Mrs Behrends plan retirement, moving to Fairbury after decades farming the place.

Harold Henrichs recounts wartime voyage toward Sicily

In a letter from August 1943 Harold Henrichs describes leaving Camp Bowies and Camp Dix, surviving an oil-tanker collision, sailing past Bermuda to Casablanca and Rabat, training in Tunisia and Algeria, and participating in the North Africa invasion before landing near Licata Sicily with the 3rd wave. He notes no battery casualties, frequent fox-hole action, and plans to send poems and pictures.
