Mr. Joe Nippert and Mr. Arthur Grone traveled to Davenport Nebraska Monday evening due to the illness of Mrs Augusta Nippert. Surgeons found it necessary to amputate her leg just below the knee. At eighty three she faced a grave operation but survived and, though weak, has a chance for recovery.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Geer visited Belvidere Kansas last Friday for the county fair where a racing accident near the grandstand killed one driver. The day had opened with a fine fair and entertainment before the tragedy.

A. A. Eick family reports a cable from their daughter Mrs. Norman Francis Deuel saying Moscow's sky is clear. Deuels planned to sail Oct 4 on Manhattan, returning about Oct 12, but war may alter plans. Deuel, a United Press correspondent, served nearly four years in the USSR task before transfer to the United States taking effect in October. Mrs Deuel had been in Russia since June last year.

Tournament A Success Highlights Local Softball Tournament

Diller fell to Jansen 10 to 3 and Dewitt beat Odell 5 to 3 in semifinals. Jansen defeated Endicott 13 to 1 and Fairbury shut out DeWitt 10 to 0 in girls action. Finals saw DeWitt and Fairbury win $10 prizes. Jansen teams placed second for $500. Dewitt beat Jansen 10 to 5 in the men’s final. Fairbury girls topped Jansen 12 to 1.

High School Certificates Sent to Rural Jefferson County Families

Superintendents and principals of rural Jefferson County high schools are asked to send a list of county students for 1989 1940 to the county superintendent so admission certificates can be mailed directly to the high schools. Certificates will still be issued to any student or parent who requests them.

Elmer Glathar Word died Monday at his Alma Nebraska home after inflammatory rheumatism. He was 44, husband of Mrs Adelia Rahman Glathar, and father of Dracylla 18 and Richard 14. Funeral services were held Wednesday. relatives from Diller attended.

Wehlings Return From Trip

Mr and Mrs L J Wehling their daughter Magdalen and son Edward returned last week from a vacation traveling by automobile and house trailer through Minnesota and Wisconsin. They stayed with Will Tristman and Will Henrichs at Sheldon Wisconsin and enjoyed a pleasant visit. Lou Wehling surprised the Tinstmans and Henrichs by calling to buy produce. Will Tinstman sent two samples of his oats crop the Granary Fill yielded 30 bushels per acre and the Gopher 40 bushels. Will Henrichs sent thirteen feet eleven inches of binder twine marking the height of his tallest corn. Edwin Wehling left the party for the New York World's Fair and returned home last week.

Marijuana Farm Found In Hanover Boxcar

Federal and state officers arrested two men who confessed to gathering marijuana plants along the railroad right of way in Hanover. They were drying and packing the plants in a boxcar for shipment to a California market, with over 2000 plants and 12 ½ pounds of dry leaves recovered. The report notes marijuana growing nearby including near Diller.

Henry Wiemers returned from the Iowa State Fair where his Herefords ranked third among seven major breeds, a 1000 percent gain from last year. He led in seven first prizes, sold the grand champion boar for 125 dollars, and was elected VP of the National Hereford Hog Record Association, which has over three thousand animals recorded.

Vacation in Minnesota trip brings Sweden guest home

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nippert and Margery returned Sunday from a Minnesota trip. Mrs. Nippert’s sister Mrs. Wm. Lind and daughters Mariam and Carol stayed two weeks and returned to Stockholm Sweden with her. Mr. Lind recently arrived in the U S and will visit in Diller and Axtell Nebraska. The Nipperts enjoyed time with relatives in Pipestone Hedley Slayton and Bingham Lake Minnesota and visited Mr. and Mrs. Max Hall at Lincoln on Sunday.
