Twelve year old Robert Garrels sustained a eye injury when a low tree branch struck him during a pony ride with his brother. He was treated by a Beatrice specialist who stitched the eyelid and provided follow up care. Robert is recovering at home with no serious outcomes expected.
Mrs Emma Hays widow of the late Stark Hays died at a Hastings hospital Tuesday evening about 7. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 30 PM at Waggoner's Funeral Home with Rev H H Pyche officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery.
A straw vote on Nebraska governor candidates Cochran Bryan and Warner will be held in Diller next Saturday night if weather permits. The ballot box and tickets will be carried by Harry Green, and all voters will have a chance to vote.
Jefferson county farmers were notified that November 19 has been set as the deadline for payment of all 1939 wheat insurance premiums. Mr. Roney, ACP committee chairman, announced after receiving word from the State Committee.
Julia Diller and Carolyn Clark chosen as DHS cheer leaders for 1938 39. Max Thompson remains on the team. Grades report organizing a pep squad and selecting cheerleaders, with the pep groups performance noted as worth seeing.
George Fisher exchanges his residence and several vacant lots in the town’s north for the Resslers residence known as the Paul Stange place in the south. The deal is described as an even exchange.

In Gage county, C W Douglas of Cortland won the cornhusking contest with 17.58 bushels in 80 minutes, followed by Charlies Hertlin of Pickrell and P Heist of DeWitt.
The Diller grade school operetta scheduled for November 2 has been postponed to a later date, likely a week or two before Christmas. Interfering commitments and a five dollar royalty for the chosen operetta prompted the change.
George Specht who recently underwent gall stone removal was brought from Omaha to his daughter Mrs. Vernon Pickard's home in Fairbury Wednesday forenoon. He was reported not feeling well and the Omaha trip proved hard on him.
Dr. Diehl arrived at the office this forenoon showing a red hybrid ever blooming rose. The plant, planted in his garden this spring, is a prized specimen he hyphenates as the last rose of summer.
Lew Barber was badly hurt when a roof collapsed on him during removal of old buildings at Shea. The incident occurred several days ago and involved friends who admire his resilience.
Rumors say Republicans will stage a large rally at Diller on Saturday evening November 5 seeking to overturn Democratic progress made so far.
Arthur J. Denney was elected president of the Jefferson County Association last Thursday. Sean Gallamore serves as secretary treasurer.

A Wednesday evening Democratic rally drew a fair crowd. County committee chair Edw. Wunder led the meeting with candidates Aish Wiemers Geo Skukety D. B. Young F. Busing Gladya Hughes Roda Thompson present. Hon. Chas. Smrhe of Milligan spoke, defending the New Deal while noting some foolishness, yet aiming to promote prosperity for all citizens.
Mias Fannie Diller just returned from Denver after a brief visit with her nephew and his wife Mr and Mrs Henry Diller. Henry is recovering from injuries from an automobile accident on his way to a Bottled Gas convention in Des Moines Iowa. Mr C R Hustead head of the Propanias Company, of ter, was slightly injured in the same crash.
Chas Waggoner and Wm Fink from south of Odell drove to Hastings with an ambulance to retrieve Mrs Hays body. A mistake led to an initial report that Miss Marie Meyer had a son and that Mrs Hays was involved in a marriage rumor.
Mrs Kenneth Young and her daughter Nancy visited from Seward to attend the Junior class play in town. They stayed with Eloise Diller and planned to return to Seward the following Friday. Roger Diller, Eloise’s brother, was in the cast.
Fairbury hosts county citizenship contests next Monday October 31 to select four youth two boys and two girls to advance to the district and state finals. Tests read by a county committee will choose the pair from each high school with finalists later reviewed by Prof A A at the University of Nebraska before Omaha World Herald funds travel for the 52 finalists. Diller High shows strength with Elm er Sasse a county tie for first and named representatives Freddie Drexler Robert Duis Jean Bond and Lorene Achtemeier with Darrell Beckwith and Carolyn Clark as alternates.
Emil Krebs hauled his corn shelter into town Tuesday and set it up behind Cooper Co's main office where several hundred bushels of shelled corn and cobs were piled. Men scooped corn in one end and shelled corn came out the other, drawing curious onlookers unseen in ages.
Rev George D McClelland pastor of the Fairbury Baptist church has chosen to edit the Inter-church Messenger for the next year. The paper focuses on Fairbury church interests though it was intended as a county church publication. rural churches have shown little interest.
Mr and Mrs Erwin Mayborp and their baby of near Beatrice visited relatives in and near Diller last Sunday.
Geo. A. Skultety states he will maintain his County Attorney office in the court house whenever space is provided by the County Board. He notes the board moved the Agricultural Agent, saving taxpayers at least 960 dollars, and says space decisions are the board's duty not his. He expresses gratitude for cooperation and readiness to comply with reasonable requests.
