Rupert Hughes and his family visited Steele City last Sunday. He became ill that evening and was taken to Odell hospital where he underwent an appendicitis operation Monday morning. He is reported to be progressing well.
Mrs. Wm. Frank aged 77 fell Friday eight miles north of Diller breaking the left hip. She is cared for by her son Wm. Frank Jr. and was taken to her daughter Mrs. George Decker’s home southwest of Harbine by Waggoner Bros. ambulance service.
The daily press reports Willard Lau died last Saturday at Legion Veterans Hospital in Texas. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Lau of Lincoln wholesale grocers and connected with the H P Lau company Mrs Willard. Lau was formerly Miss Thelma Stotts of this place. He leaves his wife and a six year old son.
Mr Paul Stange received a letter from his brother Carl stating he reached Fontana California last Saturday noon with little car trouble. Stange notes orange lemon and grove fruit trees are blooming and bearing fruit simultaneously.
Daniel Peters of St Paul Nebraska 27 year old farmer was instantly killed when his tractor toppled backward while digging a trench silo on Monday evening. He was driving up a steep incline when the equipment overturned trapping him beneath.
Nebraska reports its first snow of the year on Thursday September 26 with light flurries in western counties. A heavier snow event in Wyoming caused flight groundings and disruptions.

Marion was placed in Lynch hospital with a nervous breakdown from overwork while carrying four grades plus music.
Plans are laid for the seventh annual corn husking contest to be held the latter part of October on the H. A. Drake farm northwest of Steele City. Sponsored by the local K P Lodge, the expected field yield is forty bushels. Along with husking, entertainment is planned, announced by W. C. Palmer in Steele City News.

They planned to visit relatives in Harrison then travel to the Black Hills of South Dakota before returning home. A later card reported arrival in Marshland at 11 a m Sunday with no car trouble on a 500 mile trip in about 13 hours.
Mr and Mrs John Carico visited Falls City for a two day picnic last Friday and Saturday. A Falls City group went to Rule Sunday to fish. Mr C reports they caught nice fish. A river baptism took place during the day as part of the outing, an unusual event these days.

Dr John R Gettys 67 of Omaha died at his home on Wednesday afternoon. A Methodist leader for fifty years he served as Beatrice district superintendent for two terms. His first charge was in 1888 and his last role was secretary of the claimants fund before resignation. He suffered his fifth stroke shortly before death.
