Day Program at Diller Decoration Day to be held Wednesday May 30 at 2 30 p m in the Opera House. All are invited to attend the program led by Eva Green and featuring the Robert Pullen Memorial Pageant and a Star Spangled Banner by Rev Patten. After the program children will decorate soldiers graves.
Citizens are requested to bring evergreens and flowers to City Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The ladies of the society are asked to help craft wreaths to decorate graves of soldiers.
Mavis Holle and assistants Ruth Ann Hiatt and Betty Rick sold 200 poppies last Saturday in a house to house and street sale. All poppies sold by evening with proceeds to disabled war veterans. Contributors praised for their fine work. Also mention of Lincoln trip with 420 Stanley and a regents scholarship as the second semester ends.
The Congregational Church honored 36 servicemen in a Sunday worship program. Names on the honor roll were read and requests were included from those who replied in time, with delayed notes to be acknowledged later from the pulpit.
Funeral services were held at Fairbury on Monday for Emil Kujath who died Saturday when his tractor stuck in mud and flipped backward. He is a brother of Paul Kujath of the Diller area northwest of town.
Mr. Wm. Eickmeyer a former Diller businessman was discharged Monday from Lutheran hospital at Beatrice. He entered the hospital a few weeks before the family moved to Plymouth.
Mr and Mrs Hubert Filley and their daughter Janet with Mr and Mrs W I Filley during a visit. Hubert has several job offers for next year and may accept a principalship in a Washington state school.
Typo correction clarifies her husband preceded her to death on August 21 1920 and mentions two children Raymond who died September 28 1906 and a daughter who died in infancy.
Ditler business houses will close at noon on Decoration Day May 30 and will open at 7 o'clock in the evening.
Garnet Barber, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herb Barber, is performing clerical duties in the triple A office at Fairburr.
A chaotic sale record lists bidders and odd items such as flour bags, sugar, beef roast, chickens, barrels, and various small goods. Names include Ray vin Schultis, Ed Weers, Lawrence Caldwell, J S Diller, Irwin Schultis, EJ Jordening, Wm Weers, and others as they bid on livestock, feed, oils, tools, and household items at a Saturday event.
High water in Indian Creek weakened a bank under the railroad bridge near Odell. A 30 foot long by a feet deep hole opened under the tracks but was discovered before passenger train No. 16, delaying service and holding freight No. 63. Crews will drive piles and add spans causing several days to a week of no crossing, with transfers through Diller and rail traffic rerouted Odell to Wymore sides until repairs complete.
Mr and Mrs O J Mayborn traveled to Lincoln with Irene Greider and Shirley Garrels who stayed to seek summer employment. Their son Lt Alfred Mayborn and his wife accompanied them home and will remain until Friday as Alfred heads to San Francisco then likely to the South Pacific. Also visiting were Lt Iz Richards and his wife with son Dicke of Imperial Nebraska, with Richard said to be in the South Pacific.
Sgt Edward Behrends, liberated from a German POW camp, writes to parents that he is en route home and feels relieved to be free from the high wire fences. He landed on D Day with the 90th Infantry and was missing in action on November 10, later identified as a prisoner in March.
Harold Fesnacht of the US Navy and his wife visited relatives in Diller on Tuesday. Harold is on a layover en route to Florida from California, where he has been stationed.
Arnold W Henrichs who was on a 16 day furlough left Wednesday for Camp Crowder in Missouri where he is stationed for the present.
Cpl Clarence Hullman writes from Germany dated May 10 to his mother stating arrival in a large building where they stay and that the country is beautiful to travel through though the current location is heavily ruined by war.
A historical notice itemizes donors and goods for a bond sale led by Robert Upson. Entries include John Patras and Leo Allenwater with six glasses for 75, Willie Clark one dollar for 100, Tony Zelleny with a pipe, several food and fabric items, and cash gifts from numerous contributors.
Rainy weather spurs a church project as men from the Congregational church redecorate and enlarge the basement. Clarence Steffen oversaw tiled walls and a rebuilt chimney on the outer wall to gain space and improve appearance. The plan includes interior painting, wallpaper, redecorating the annex and kitchen, refinishing floors, and a fall new foreseen use. Women provide meals for workers while a Nebraska Pilgrim Fellowship work camp will paint the exterior later in the summer with younger volunteers invited.
Mrs. Roy Diller hosted Sunday dinner with Rev. and Mrs. Ray Osborne and their Beathi children, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Oaks, Mr. Bob Oaks, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer. Rev Osborne is her cousin and plans to leave for Holdrege soon.
Percy Kurtz and his sister visited Mrs Christie Seaman and Fred Clark last Thursday and Friday, as they left Tuesday evening for Kurtz's home in California.
Mrs Howard Peters spent Sunday at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Will Ames. Her husband is stationed at Ft Knox and has recently been promoted to Staff Sergeant.
Cpl Bud Lottman arrived Sunday via Rocket from Camp Chathan Field Georgia and is spending a 21 day furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Jake Lottman Rev and Mrs L Wolff and Elizabeth Ann came from Bloomfield Nebraska to be at the family home while her brother is here They plan to return home later in the week
Heavy rain last Sunday night caused Indian Creek to overflow its banks and rise along the highway toward town. Residents helped Geer Bros move goods from the Phillip 66 station to higher ground for hours. Water reached about two inches inside the building.
Mr and Mrs Fisher Musser and a pal visited Sunday at the home of his sister Mrs Quinter Fry and husband.
