Memorial Services Planned by Diller Legion and Auxiliary

The Diller American Legion and auxiliary will conduct Memorial Day services in the city park and at Prairie Home Cemetery. Betty Rossell, operator of Guilia's Beauty Shop for the past three years, has resigned and will return after a vacation. her replacement will be noted in Beatrice's Marys Beauty.

WSCS Meeting and Community Activities Noted

The WSCS will meet May 25 in the church basement at 2 p.m. A power meeting will sell May baskets with food or useful articles. Bring a May basket and a guest. Refreshments served. the public is invited. Also noted are events on the Diller Sunday train carrying Toscanini and his orchestra, an accident involving Francis Packer on railroad tracks, a student trip to Lincoln with visits to the penitentiary and state capitol, a Senior Clues play in Beatrice, and a new telephone directory being prepared with entries due by May 27.

Food Sale By Congregational Church Women

The Congregational church women plan a food sale on Saturday May 20 at C J Mayborn office. Ernest Sasse returns from a two week hospital stay after surgery. Sunday dinner guests included several local families and relatives. Guilia's Beauty Shop to be open part time after May 20 until June 1. John Huttenmeyer returns to duties at the Cooper elevator after six weeks off.

Senior class valedictorian duties and scholarship grants

Darlene Roelfs is valedictorian for the senior class with Donald Romisch as salutatorian and Evelyn Hays ranking third, all with averages above 94. Diller public schools hold commencement at the opera house with scholarships awarded to Roelfs and Romisch. Other top students include Leo Allen, Donna Garrels, Joann Jordening, and Lyle Schauelle with averages over 90. John Steiner sold 40 acres west of Diller to Harry Remley. Mrs. E A Tyler returned home from Bloomington. Donna Jean Hacker and Gerald Meyer were among 27 District IT students who toured Lincoln sponsored by the Fairbury Kiwanis club. Donna Jean tied for second. Mary Elizabeth Freiteg teaches them.

Two Men Escape Tornado Flood On Ellis Trip

Joe Nippert and his brother in law E A Tyler traveled to Ellis Kansas to visit a boyhood friend Frank Case involved with the Pine Ridge dam project a government irrigation scheme on the Smoky River. On return they were swept up by a tornado and flash flood narrowly escaping injury passing wrecked trailers and flooded ditches.
