A request asks the owner of a fence stretcher to return it. A property inquiry mentions P. W. Price in a section description with a price of 8400 dollars. The Presbyterian Missionary Society plans a May 18 meeting with Mrs. Isabella Raymond and Mrs. Callender as leader.
Asa Colman and Allen Colman report their sister Mrs. W. R. Davia aged over eighty residing at Seward Nebraska has suffered a broken hip from a fall several days ago.
Mrs. Jender Newtson and daughter from Hastings Nebraska, former Diller residents, arrived Wednesday for a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Chas Brandt and other old neighbors.
S E Samuelson emergency district agricultural agent for Jefferson Thayer and Nuckols counties visited Diller last Friday and opened a labor bureau with H Z Diller at the meat market. If you need help or want a job see Hod.
Bay D. R. Kelley departed Tuesday noon to attend the G. A. R. state encampment in Seward Nebraska where he once lived. He plans to visit his children in Lincoln and Council Bluffs and his brother in law in Omaha before returning.
John W. Roseman son of Frank Roseman of six miles south of Diller left Fairbury on April 80th with the Jefferson county contingent for Camp Funston. He returned home Wednesday of last week having been discharged due to defective eyesight.
Finder calls Mrs John McKie Jansen for a lost pony and lists 21 ladies muslin gowns priced 65 cents each. Mention of Miss Gertrude Diller visiting Lincoln, Rex Green’s property trade, Irene Blauser offering music lessons, and W H Schnuelle cashier at Citizens State Bank breaking in a new Overland purchased from S C Hutchinson.
For sale alfalfa seed 98 percent pure 90 percent germination. Clarence Steffen mentioned. John Jobman and his father Peter Jobman drove two new automobiles home from Omaha early this week for Jobman and Albers.
Earl J. Zook among 52 Gage county youths named for the May 25 draft departure to Camp Dodge Iowa for training. The Diller native is listed among local draftees in the next contingent.
C L Waggoner returned Sunday from Chappell Nebraska where he competed in a shooting tournament and finished fourth. He blamed ill luck and high altitude that affected his visibility during the event.
A local ad announces a cash sale of twine at a price lower than typical retail. The notice urges customers to call and purchase what they need promptly. The vendor signs as S. A. Hutchinson.
Mrs Ruth Blauser visited the Diller relatives then left Monday to join her husband Lawrence Blauser in Falls City. She was accompanied by her sister Miss Elsie Lamb who returned Wednesday.
Charles Gerwick and Mary Virginia Novotny, respected locals east of Diller, were wed by County Judge O'Keefe at Beatrice courthouse last Wednesday. The couple will settle on a four mile east farm Mr. Gerwick has long worked.
Frank Nelson and family of Plymouth visit Sunday afternoon with old friends in Diller. A baby girl born May 13 to Mr and Mrs Albert Steffen in the Shea neighborhood, eight pounds. An eight and a half pound boy born Saturday morning to Mr and Mrs Merle Fish of Lincoln, at Mrs Mary Miller’s home in the city. Eva Witty Green visits weekend with husband R W Green, returns to Lincoln to teach and draw higher pay. Billy Tinstman of Diller travels to Upland-Fuesday to aid Clint Tinstman of Hildreth with a new switch board for Goal company. Mrs Tinstman and Arlie accompany him and will visit at Hildreth. Tinstman’s parents are Mr and Mrs John Gretzinger. Mrs Tristman plans a brief Reynolds visit before returning home. Men’s dress parade army shoes arrive at Leeds. Albert Sasse returns from Camp Funston on a 30 day furlough and enjoys camp life. Jefferson county draft contingent of 17 registrants to leave for Camp Dodge Des Moines within five days after May 25.
The Diller Dist No. 70 will close a nine month term next Friday May 24. The 12th grade graduating class includes Grace Johnson and seventeen others. Baccalaureate will be Sunday May 19 at the opera house with C C Atwood delivering the sermon. commencement Thursday May 23 features Burnham's orchestra.
A free farm labor bureau is set up at The Meat Market with H. Z. Diller in charge to refer farm hands to work and assist farmers in finding help. If labor shortages occur, Diller will contact S. E. Samuelson in Hebron Nebraska to coordinate across communities.
Mr and Mrs Bert Greenwood traveled to St Joseph Missouri where Mrs Greenwood underwent gallstone surgery on Monday morning. She came through the operation in good shape and is reported to be recovering as well as could be expected.
Tuesday consignments included 2 cars of cattle and 1 car of hogs by the shipping association 1 car of hogs by John Plager and 2 cars of cattle by Geo Henrichs. Mr Henrichs and Charley Barber accompanied the stock to market.
Paul L Holder, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Holder formerly of Diller, captured by Germans on the western front. He belonged to the 22nd area squadron mechanical branch and trained under British Royal Flying Corps officers. He had flown before capture, arrived in England February 17, and had recent pilot license recommendations. His father is a Burlington night agent at Hastings.
A lurid ad promotes an Auto Agent claiming to offer a pleasant Joyrtide ride. The pitch suggests the buyer will own the car after the experience and casts the agent as a public benefactor who compels people to spend money for entertainment.
A strong south wind blew through Wednesday and sent temperatures up while failing to bring the long awaited rain the wheat crop badly needs.
The total solar eclipse on June 8 is postponed one hour due to daylight saving time. Observers in a fifty mile band from state to Florida will see the eclipse begin at 4 12 p m, total at 5 24 p m, and end at 6 27 p m local time.
Church reports strong attendance last Sunday and invites interest in forming a War Savings Society per Nebraska Director. Pastor to preach at Rock Creek next Sunday morning. Sunday school at 10 o clock. Epworth League devotional at 7 30 PM. No evening sermon.
The Sabbath school convenes at 10 30 next Sabbath with no 11 o clock service due to Mr Larkin absence. A union service at the Opera House at 830 p m honors the High School graduating class with sermon by Mr Atwood. Our school held a brief Mother's Day program last Sunday. Rev J Wallace Larkin is in Omaha for special hospital treatment and will return in ei for service on Sunday May 26.
