A poem praising the modern mother who balances aging with youth and shared family joys. Florence H. Walcott celebrates a mother whose heart remains youthful while guiding growing children through modern challenges.
Educational Day activities were held last Friday at Diller despite cold winds. Twelve rural schools participated and many patrons attended the program at the school house, a noon dinner, a Diner Band concert, and athletic events at the city park.

Mr Wood and Ingalsbe will not attend Diller on Thursday. All members must be on hand Thursday afternoon and evening for regular work. Monday rehearsal canceled with no band on Monday night. Mr Wood will direct the Hanover band and orchestra in a radio program over KI Monday evening from 7 15 to 8 16.
Joseph Krotz and son M J Krotz will hold a sale of sixty head of fancy Aberdeen Angus cattle at their Odell area farm on the south side Monday May 27 at 1 o'clock. Twenty bulls and forty females will be offered for sale.
The regular monthly Dorcas class meeting will be held next Thursday afternoon May 11 in the church basement. Members and friends are warmly invited to attend.
A kittenball game is announced for Saturday night at the city park. community residents are invited to attend and enjoy the playful match featuring local teams and mascots.
Miss Lucille Hanson leaves the Diller school system to take a public school position in Blair Nebraska with a twenty five percent salary increase. She has taught for five years in Diller and will join Blair after a tenure helping 3rd through 6th grades. Alma mater Dana College Blair.
A delegation of wheat and corn hog allotment committeemen and the Agricultural Agent from Saline County selected Senator F. S. Wells to represent Saline and Jefferson counties at a Washington meeting on the State Adjustment Amendments. Rep Ben H. Busboom of Saline is the alternate. Wells will join farmer reps from other counties leaving Lincoln next Saturday. expenses will be funded by individual farmers and shared by both counties, with possible aid from the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce.
Waggoner posted 99 of 100 to win a registered trapshoot with 24 shooters Sunday. A large audience at the Methodist church enjoyed a program by the Community Orchestra directed by Mrs. Schindler. Miss Hansen gave a notable solo while vocal and violin duets impressed. Pilgrim Chorus from Tannhauser delighted many. Guest artist J. C. Shadduck, Mrs. Schindler’s brother, attended. Diller shows notable local musical talent and hopes for more future concerts.
Cattle fed by Gage county stockman Hirman near Odell topped Chicago on Monday April 29 selling 20 head of Hereford steers at about 1291 pounds. Price reached 1500 dollars, bought by Wilson and Company for eastern shipment, marking a new high for Nebraska steers in five years.
The May 7 1916 sinking of the Lusitania is recalled as Captain Schweiger of the J-20 torpedoed the liner. Eighteen minutes after the blast the ship sank with 1189 aboard, including 124 Americans and over 100 children under three. Schweiger later perished when U-88 sank. Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare helped pull the US into WWI.

The mothers and daughters event Wednesday featured Peer Gynt's suite by Mrs. Schindler, five girls singing Mother, readings by Mrs. Scott Miller, and pianologues by Mrs. Neuman from Wymore. Gayle Cully closed with a march as attendees enjoyed flute, violin, and piano music plus refreshments.
The U S Supreme Court, in a five to four ruling, held the railroad pension law unconstitutional. The decision states retirement age at 65 violates the Constitution, leaving current pensions unchanged. The ruling shocks young workers who expected elders to retire. about thirty men at Fairbury would be affected.
The Fairbury Journal reports marriage licenses issued in the first four months of this year match the same period in 1984 43. May 1984 was strong with 13 licenses. Blanche Haning Judge Bee's assistant considers advertising to boost May numbers, hoping a rain might help marriages.
