Fire at rural schoolhouse sparks quick firefighters
A small fire reported last Mondayforenoon at a rural schoolhouse 24 miles south of town caused a brief scare. Smoke appeared on the southwest roof corner near the deck, prompting an alarm. Will Abrends and Carl Wenz reached the scene with ladders as the blaze grew in the old shingle roof. A few buckets of water stopped the fire, traced to a spark from the flue, with many townspeople joining the crowd.
