Dr. S. B. Viers rented twelve acres of Indian Creek bottom land to W. E. Burke or Beatrice for planting watermelons for commercial use. The community ponders how the venture will raise funds and support for local boys.
Miss Eunice Barber 18 daughter of Mr and Mrs Les Barber of near Diller and John Jansen of near Harbine wed at the Fairbury Methodist parsonage on March 9. They will reside on a farm five miles northwest of Harbine.

Mrs. Jennie Reiher district six supervisor from Red Cloud visited Naomi Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Diller for a school of instruction. A six o'clock luncheon followed the afternoon meeting with guests from Pawnee City Violet and Steele City chapters and members from Beatrice and Beatrice area.
Steele City Bank ceased to open on Monday as officers decided it would be unwise to continue operations under current conditions. The bank arranged with First National Bank of Fairbury to liquidate and transfer all notes and accounts, with checks honored by Fairbury. Nell Drake from Steele City will oversee the Steele City business at Fairbury, under Chester A. Sharmann as president.
Cal Waggoner traveled to Beatrice Sunday and achieved a perfect 25 in a jack rabbit shoot at the Beatrice Gun Club. The event drew sixteen shooters with Waggoner posting 96 of 100 blue rocks. Other scores included Fellers 88 Carter 87 Schainist 84 Baker 84 and Downer 79 among nine competitors who shot at 100 rocks.
Harry Allen and Virgil Geer left Wednesday forenoon for St. Joseph and Kansas City to buy store fixtures. Allen has been warned to vacate his current store room as owner Drexler plans to use the building, with Drexler having moved from Steele City to Diller. Allen will arrange another room for his grocery stock.
Mr and Mrs Ray Wilfley and daughter will leave Fairbury to establish a new home on the west coast Ray Wilfley has served with the First National Bank at Fairbury for many years and previously worked in banking at Steele City.
Richard Mayborn is away from the bank for a week or two, with his wife handling the books in his absence. Reports say he is in Columbus performing special duties for the Beakers Life Insurance Company of Des Moines.
Homer Brunk, manager of the Farmer's Store in Fairbury and former manager of the Farmer's Co-op in Diller, has filed for the Republican nomination for county clerk.
The Con gregational Sunday School Keystone class plans a food sale Saturday afternoon at Clark's store to raise funds.
Harry Green began removing the old W. H. Diller residence in the southwest town area. The building on the John Folkers estate sold for 200 dollars to Clifford Sparks, and Green’s bid of 150 dollars to tear it down was accepted, clearing the landmark.
The General Office of the Beatrice Power Company will relocate from Marysville Kansas to Odell Nebraska around April 1. The Kock building will be remodeled to house the accounting office display room for electrical merchandise and the general service department. Margaret Griffiths will oversee accounting and R R. Thomas will manage general operations.
Allen Taylor reported the loss of household items and Vernon Asper lost several chickens to a burglary in Endicott last Saturday. Sheriff Ackman searched a suspect location but found no goods. he believes the culprits will be apprehended.

Mrs Agnes Rebecca Diller 68 died suddenly on a sidewalk in Pittsburg Kansas while returning home from a visit in California. She was born January 9 1870 in Davenport Iowa and had lived in Pittsburg since 1897. Survivors include her husband two daughters two sons a sister and two brothers. The funeral was at the Christian church with tributes from her pastor and a large floral display from relatives and friends.
Eva C Hamley 80 11 15 died at home of daughter Pearl Hammond Topeka Kansas March 12 1938. Husband Edwin C Hamley died over eighteen years ago. A tornado struck Belleville Illinois Tuesday evening killing at least eight people. Belleville lies just outside East St. Louis. The Caldwell family reports Bert Caldwell as a brother of Lawrence Caldwell and has been unable to reach him to confirm his safety.
Mr and Mrs J S Coon of Beatrice visited at the Sailing home with Mrs John Sailing, and Mr and Mrs Wm Weiner and two Odell sons. The evening featured a Pinochle game and refreshments served by the hostess.
Arthur Timm is wrecking the outbuildings on the Meyer property in town and transporting the debris to his farm six miles south of Diller.
Mrs. A O Burkett died at her Beatrice home on March 11 at age 72. The Burkett family formerly resided in Lanham.
J. E. Miller, leader of the Miller & Paine store in Lincoln, died at his Lincoln home on Tuesday at age 80.
Mr Rediger explains that farmers with last fall planted crops need not fear 1938 wheat allotments. Wheat counts with oats and barley against depleting crop totals, with exceptions for farms planted entirely to wheat. The new plan allows landlords and tenants to share payments and may treat multiple owner lands as one farm for signup.
O S Bare, extension entomologist at Nebraska College of Agriculture, says castor beans are not a certain solution to grasshopper control in 1938. After inquiries, he notes experiments show the plant does not destroy hoppers and research is ongoing at the college.
Dr and Mrs Ellis were surprised Saturday when Guy Ellis of La Grande Oregon dropped in. Mr Ellis had traveled to South Bend Indiana and was driving a new Studebaker motor home. He left Monday and stopped at Chester Nebraska to visit his nephew Cecil Elis and family.
J. H. Madden of Dix Nebraska halted in Diller on return from Savannah Missouri for a brief visit with his son Lawrence Madden and family. He left for home on Wednesday after receiving treatment at a Savannah hospital.
