Behrends Sees Wide Tree Die Off After Early Freeze

Behrends notes many trees in the area are dead or near death after an unseasonable freeze in early November. He cites fruit trees, including cherries peaches apples and pears, as most affected though vines and shrubs fared better. Some live trees show dead wood at the base and may bloom only to wither later as sap runs out. Nurser y stock risk warned. Mr and Mrs Patmore and son move from Diller area to vacant place near Ellis. A church basket dinner honors them with friends attending despite road conditions.

Clergyman Errands After Son Injured In Auto Crash

Rev. W H Clark rushed to Hastings after learning his youngest son was hurt in an auto collision en route to Diller for his parents golden wedding. He sustained a broken wrist and minor injuries.

Miss Esther Behrends, D. H S Senior class member, has been elected to serve in district 58 for the coming year. The district lies six sites south and one west of Dil er.

School and village caucuses nominate candidates for 1941 terms

On Friday at the town hall the Diller district held school and village caucuses chaired by J Smith Diller and S Hutchinson. School nominees for three year Board of Education seats include W G Anderson John Huttenmeyer Chas KE Waggoner and L J Wolff with two to be elected. Two year vacancy selections list Ray Uehling Floyd Hughes. Village nominees for two years are John Clausen C L Geer and W E Anderson. Committee of Fred Clark Cal Waggoner John Steiner to fill possible village vacancies. Annual picnic favored.

Mrs Christie Seaman Celebrates 83rd Birthday in Diller

Mrs Christie Seaman marked her eighty third birthday last Friday February 28 at her Diller home with a six o'clock dinner for 23 guests including her children grandchildren and great grandchildren. She received cakes cards letters and many remembrances.

Local Moves Shuffle Town Dwellings After Recent Vacancies

Mr and Mrs Floyd Hughes moved into their new home last Friday after Rev and Mrs Pyche moved out Will Green moved from the Fisher residence to the old Fred Clark house just north of the school house vacating the Hughes home The changes will ease Will Green who serves as school janitor through proximity to the building.

County Spelling Contest Set for Fairbury Court Room

A county spelling contest will be held at the county courthouse in Fairbury on Saturday March 15 starting at 9 30 a.m. All Jefferson county eighth grade students and younger are eligible. Participants must register at nine o clock.

Family reunion at Gerd Henrichs Sr home ends visit

Last Sunday a family reunion was held at the Gerd Henrichs Sr home to bid farewell to Mrs Dommer and daughter Adelaide and son Edward who had visited this winter with Mrs Dommer's uncle, Gerd Henrichs Sr and family. They returned to Craig Iowa on Monday.

Elliot D lert and Le Roy De Shazer from Lincoln arrived last Saturday to reside at the Protestant Orphans Home. They enrolled Monday at Diller school in the 6th and 7th grades respectively.

Clarks Celebrate Golden Anniversary With Large Town Welcome

Rev and Mrs W H Clark marked fifty years of marriage on March 4 1941 at the Methodist church in their city. The event drew delegations from nine southeastern Nebraska communities and featured a noon ceremony, a three course dinner, a large open house and a program by the Sunday School orchestra. The couple born in 1891 and 1873 respectively were honored with gifts, telegrams and flowers as family and friends joined in the celebration.

County Agent Hosts Livestock Feeder Meeting and Dairy Talk

W. W. Derrick of the College of Agriculture will assist Frank Flynn in a Jefferson County livestock feeder meeting at the Fairbury courthouse at 2 p.m. on Wednesday March 12 focusing on beef cattle and hogs. A Guernsey and dairy meeting follows at 8 p.m. March 14 in the District Court room. A Women's Project Club training session for leaders is set for March 14 at 10 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Fairbury, with club presidents in attendance.

Beatrice District Sees Delegations Gather for Rev Clark

Delegations from Fairbury Nemaha Hubbell Alexandria Ellis Sterling Enidi cott Daykin and Hopewell attended events related to Rev Clark's ministry in the Beatrice district. Notables from nearby towns included Mr and Mrs Wm Leask D J Wood Homer Yeakle Don Shearon and others from Fairbury and Ellis.
