Miss Adelia Hayes has come back from Fremont where she taught for a year. The week has been extremely hot with temperatures from 98 to 104 degrees.
Mrs. Mary Miller says her son Scott writes from Camp Mills Long Island that he and others from Camp Funston are now at Camp Mills.
Frank Gerwick reports his son George has arrived overseas safely and is in Company A of the 137th Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Forces Odell Wave.
Mrs Winnie Herwig of Humboldt arrived Sunday evening for a visit with her parents Mr and Mrs A L Tristman and her brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Hedrick.
Prof. and Mrs. Howard B. Smith returned yesterday from visiting relatives at Davenport and Steele City. They are keeping house for Mrs Robertson while she visits in Iowa.
A party of Diller boy scouts spent three days camping on the Little Blue river near Steele City last week. They were accompanied by scout master Prof. H. B. Smith and H. C. Atwood pastor of the Christian church.
John F Weers who left Fairbury May 27 with the Jefferson county selective draft men for Camp Dodge Indiana has returned to the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Henry Weers two miles west of Diller having been exempted as we understand because of heart trouble.
Mr and Mrs Ray Hedrick of Bainbridge Ohio visited Sunday with her parents Mr and Mrs A L Tinstman and other Diller relatives before he faces possible draft. Mrs Hedrick formerly worked at Record and toured the office Wednesday afternoon.
A local report notes Elmo Hadley installing a tile silo for Robi Eastwood. The item promotes War Savings Stamps as a way to support government efforts and personal savings.
Rev and Mrs F A Carmony of Blue Springs paid a short Monday forenoon call on friends in Diller.
Misses Dora Willems Lillian Wohlfarth and Pearl Bell traveled to Peru last week to join a summer session at the state normal school.
Rev. and Mrs. J Wallace Larkin and daughter Miss Mildred Rogers traveled to Omaha on Tuesday as Mr. Larkin prepared for a hospital admission and possible surgery.
The Avery Lumber Co announces a car load of coke on track by week end or early next week. OC Geer, manager, asks customers to place orders promptly.
Miss Fern Cavett returned Saturday evening from Beatrice where she assisted her aunt Mrs Earl Peare with house work and child care while Earl Peare was in the hospital for an operation.
Mies Mary Ellen Line who taught last year at Niobrara Nebraska visited Sunday before leaving for home. She spent time with Mr and Mrs Arthur Treick in Scottland South Dakota, former residents of Diller.
John Albers of the Jobman and Albers garage is called for war service as a machinist. He will report at Fairbury on Saturday and receive three months training at the Nebraska State University to prepare for overseas duty.
The Misses Pearl Diller Ethel Ellis Thelma Stotts Francis Eick and Alice Line attended a Crete state Camp Fire Girls meeting on Tuesday. They went with Miss Dysart their expected chaperon and were accompanied by Miss Grace Myers and Marie Stotts.
Saturday evening a near total solar eclipse drew crowds in Diller as groups used smoked glass to view the event. The sun was about 90 percent hidden, casting a twilight-like dimming for a short span and drawing keen interest from onlookers.

Weather reports mention no rain for days with wheat and oats suffering, while corn prospers in the heat. Mrs. Sylvia Fish and her two children who visited at her mother Mrs. Mary Miller's home returned Sunday to Lincoln and were accompanied home by Miss Laree Thompson.

Miss Liza Lambert arrived Tuesday from Guide Rock to visit her brother-in-law and sister Mr and Mrs Cedric Fanders. Another sister Miss Gertrude Lambert will join them Saturday for a visit.
John Mathias, among the community’s first settlers, suffered another paralytic stroke yesterday at noon and died about five. No funeral arrangements had been made when the Record went to press last evening.
Roscoe Coleman and family traveled Monday by Ford to visit relatives in Case county and plan to return later in the week via Camp Funston AL. Tristman operates Central Granaries Co office and elevator during Mr Colman's absence.
Harry Parker, formerly a Fairbury merchant, has been chosen as manager of the Farmers Mercantile Company at Shea. Parker, with T. L. Rohrabaugh, a board director, went to St. Joseph on Tuesday to purchase a line of dry goods after the opening stock of groceries had already been bought.
Mrs. Fred Maw of Boise Idaho visits relatives near Diller after living four miles southwest of Diller. She plans to leave for Davenport Indiana early next week with Mr and Mrs Steve Maw, former Davenport residents, traveling by automobile.
The annual school meeting of Dist. No 70 was held at the school house Monday evening. Reports of the secretary treasurer and auditing committee were read and approved. C. E. Carr and C. L. Geer were elected trustees for three years. A levy of 7500 dollars was approved to meet next year’s expenses and a nine month term was voted.
J F Lanman left Kansas City Sunday morning May 26 and arrived in Fairbury the next day. He joined Camp Dodge and was placed in Company F of the 313 Supply Train. He marched to a special troop train, was issued equipment, and became corporal and driver instructor for Liberty three ton trucks. He now drives a train truck from Chicago toward Baltimore with plans to sail for France.

The Omaha Chamber of Commerce Bureau of Publicity requests newspapers and business groups in Iowa Nebraska and South Dakota to submit photos of Liberty Loan Red Cross and War Savings demonstrations. Photos will be turned into lantern slides for display in France via Y M C A huts to show support for front line troops. Include a short descriptive sketch to accompany each image for lecture use.
The War Department and Forest Service join forces with the Boy Scouts to locate black walnut timber for airplane propellers and gun stocks after President Wilson’s call. Scouts use special forms to report findings, with forests mainly in the Midwest, Middle Atlantic, and southern Appalachians.

The children's day exercises last Sunday evening drew a large crowd and a collection of 12 dollars, to be applied to the Sunday school Liberty Bond.
