Roy Casper was injured while laying a retaining wall near Endicott when an 80 pound sandstone stone toppled into a ditch from a pile ten feet above. The rock struck his head, scalling him but he recovered and returned home the next morning after treatment in Fairbury.
In a 7-6 thriller Sunday, Diller edged Odell after a 6-6 tie through nine innings. Harold Achtemeier delivered a go ahead single in the eleventh with two on, backing a battery of Casper and Garton for Diller. Next Sunday Bremen visits Diller for another clash.
Will spend the summer in Europe sailing from Boston on the SS Europa to Paris on Saturday June 3d. He will then travel to Madrid to conduct library research in ancient history before returning in September to the University of Indiana to resume duties in the Greek department.
The cafe places six more comfortable chairs on the sidewalk daily seeking leisure class patrons. An easy chair is used, but the chairs lack cushions.

Marilyn Miller, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Miller, was stunned to receive a telegram from Kleenex Disposable Tissues Co. announcing her as the winner of a General Electric radio. Her name was read on the Monday Kleenex program and the radio arrived Wednesday morning. It was her first contest of this kind.

Harry Allen operates a white painted two-wheel trailer labeled with his store name. He uses it to haul groceries from the wholesale house to his Diller shop, advertising a guarantee that sugar won’t jump when it rains.

Mrs A T Phelps marked her 87th birthday on May 22. She was once a Steele City resident and has lived with her niece Mrs Henry Arnold in Fairbury for several years.
The annual Nebraska Methodist conference is scheduled for September 12 in Lincoln. Bishop Martin from California will preside and lead the service. The new bishop hails from the South Church.
Card from Mr. Carl Stange at Baldwin Park California says he and Mrs. Stange will leave for a trip east around June 6 traveling via Wisconsin and return through Nebraska calling at Diller en route home.
Her Beckwith came home from Steele City hospital last week and is reported to be improving in health.
Memorial Day described with crowds at Prairie Home cemetery and a large afternoon program at the opera house. The Diller Band performed under Mr. Ingalsbe, Mrs. Mary Cully sang, Reuben Fanders read a poem, and Rev. H. H. Pyché gave a patriotic address. Flowers were placed on soldier graves and many visitors arrived from distant towns.
Clinton Gerard, formerly of Fairbury, now an engineer with Gulf Oil in Colombia, reports a fellow worker killed a 32 foot boa constrictor near their camp in a letter to his parents Mr and Mrs Bert Gerard of Fairbury.
Congressman Carl T Curtis introduced a bill requiring a conspicuous yellow tag on all imported articles. The label would read Foreign Goods in gothic type and be at least one inch square to alert buyers to foreign origin.
Mrs. Elizabeth Fouts returned home from Seward after attending the graduation exercises of her granddaughter Margery Fouts daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Fouts. Margery was an honor student earning the Regent Scholarship and served as Salutatorian. The Fouts family stayed overnight before returning to Seward.
Francis Brosnihan 22 a deep sea diver aboard the Falcon helped in the Squalus submarine rescue off Portsmouth New Hampshire where the vessel sank May 23 in 240 feet of water. The crew numbered 59 with 33 survivors. Brosnihan a Endicott high school graduate later lived with his grandmother Mrs Dave Sullivan while attending school then with parents in Omaha.
Mrs J Carico was downtown last Saturday evening for the first time in several weeks, having spent the time at home battling the flu.
Mr and Mrs Herman Fair plan a new brick cottage on Endicott site replacing the home recently destroyed by fire. The project aims to restore housing at the Endicott address with inclusion of standard brickwork and residential details.
Mrs Lucas has been ill for a couple of weeks at her son Charles Lucas's home, located east of the orphanage.
George Grabber hauled lumber from Geer lumber yard this week for his new residence northeast of town.
Bert Ramsey 49 died at his Beatrice home last Thursday evening after a period of poor health. He was born near Diller to the late Joseph Ramsey family and moved to Beatrice with his parents forty two years ago. He leaves a widow two daughters and two sons, plus four brothers and three sisters. Funeral service was held at 2 PM at the Beatrice Christian Church with Rev. Fouts, and burial followed in Evergreen Home Cemetery.
Mrs Mildred Tucker Harding died at her home in Auburn Nebraska Wednesday forenoon May 31 1939. Funeral services will be held at 1 30 at Auburn with a short service at the grave in Diller cemetery at 5 00 p m Friday. A three year old daughter and her husband survive. Mrs Harding suffered from cancer.
The front of Moser and Green's barber shop and Pickard's Cafe were freshly painted white this week causing the mayor's post office building and the Viers' storefront to look shaded across the street. Clark begins setting ladders before repainting the Drexler store front as the Record reporter steps away for the week.
Just as Well Fish Chas. Green fixed up his dinner pail and gear, he and Charley joined Sam Thompson's WPA crew for a Blue River fishing trip near Endicott. Charley feels unwell but prefers fishing to town.
Mr and Mrs Robert Drake drove to Red Cloud on Saturday to visit relatives and stayed until Tuesday. Mrs D V accompanied them to Guide Rock for a relatives visit.
Dr Charles H Mayo aged 73, famed surgeon who with his brother founded the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, died at a Chicago hospital last Friday.
