Sunday marks ground hog day with forecasts of shadow. L. A. Vanier on crutches again after a foot injury from a year ago. Mr. Ralph Young and family from Tyne, Canada, visiting Superintendent Nelson’s home.
At a recent county commissioners meeting the board was reorganized and J M Koch was elected chairman marking a leadership change.
Miss Bertha Paxton and her Frankford Kans friend spent Monday evening with her cousin Mrs Will Green and family, sharing a quiet social visit.
Frank Lewis of three miles east of Diller returns to Chicago and schedules a February 13 public sale with tills printed at the office and an advertisement placed in the Record.
Alfred Sisk will hold a public sale on February 14 at his residence on Ensley Carmichael’s farm two miles south and three west of Diller in southeastern Kansas. See bills or watch the Record for particulars.
Tuesday evening January 28 friends helped Miss Leona Roseman celebrate a surprise birthday. The party featured rock music on the radio and refreshments of ice cream cake cookies and coffee before guests departed wishing her many more happy birthdays.
The Diller Woman's Club gathered January 22 at Mrs. D V Fanders home with Mrs. Flo Heorichs assisting. Special music by Miss Gregg and Miss Sper. Dainty refreshments concluded the evening. An invitation to meet the Jansen club next Thursday, February 6. Donald Tincher of Wymore, son of Mr and Mrs R E Tincher, is in very poor health and bed fast for thirty days after army gas exposure.
Beatrice residents Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fisher visited Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Green for Sunday supper. Herb Beckwith was homebound a day or two this week with the grip. Doris Beckwith bruised her right arm when thrown from a sted while coasting Wednesday evening.
AH of the Diller state university students came home for a short vacation between semesters and will return Sunday.
Dr. Claude Ellis joined the evening session of a dental convention in Lincoln Monday, accompanied by Dr. Feece of Wymore.
Mrs C E Caldwell and Mr and Mrs Eza Caldwell of Garden City Kansas visit their son and brother Oscar Caldwell and are relatives and friends at Beatrice.
R. W. Green received six car loads of fine looking ice from Crete last Saturday and has it stored in his ice house for his own and others use next summer.
Mrs. James Pickard writes that her son, Wm. Bowers, recently enlisted in the Navy near Christmas and has been moved to the officers camps at U.S. Training Station San Diego. He reports better meals and sleeping quarters, notes former pals have left for sea, and that his office remains the same with a new rank as Chief Petty Officer of Officers Mess Hall. He asks for more letters and cards from home.
The C H Cully grocery store and meat market was burglarized last Friday night. Sacks of sugar and flour a ham and other goods totaling over 50 dollars were taken. Entrance came from the rear. Everett Leggett and Frank Antrim were later arrested near Fairbury and pled guilty to breaking and entering, bound over to the district court under $1000 bonds.
S C Hutchinson and Cloyd Cully visited the county seat. The January thaw began Wednesday and remains unsettled. A daughter was born January 19 to Mr and Mrs John Roseman southeast of Diller. Jackie Ott of Miami Florida, nine, is a swimming and diving marvel performing a high dive on a pool covered with gasoline. Charley Green recovered from appendicitis and is at his son H H Green’s home. Opal Weidemann nine, of Ellis, died Tuesday morning from scarlet fever. private funeral and burial at Ellis cemetery.
Charley Geewicks, long time farmer of a half section seven miles north of Diller, has purchased a quarter near Gladstone and will hold a public sale Monday February 17 to dispose of surplus stock and machinery. Watch for big bills from this office or see the ad in the Record.
A large Beatrice apartment house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Al Ballard burned Saturday morning. The fire started on the roof and damaged furnishings on the first floor. Firemen worked with frozen hydrants as losses were estimated between 8000 and 19000 dollars with 5000 on the house and 800 on furniture.
The N R C Club held a Friday gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hill with visiting and rock games where Howard Peters won high and Mrs. Frank Grone took second. A luncheon followed. Next Friday Jan 31 the club will meet with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Grone.
Frank Haile now managers Brush Credit Assn sends news to Diller residents via Frank T. Pearce. He relays that J H Emery’s eldest son James Emery died after a brief illness. Haile notes winter was severe and asks Pearce to greet old friends in Diller.
Smith and Jones discuss a man named Wheeler known for strict punctuality. Wheeler carries his watch in his hip pocket to guarantee never being late.
