Forward looking men note March as a five pay day month. A. J. Floyd piano tuner offers guaranteed work. Jefferson county expected to receive 5965 30 from January's state school fund disbursement. Some locals adore their town except when money is to spend.
The B. B. Kensington will meet with Mrs. Harry Abrends Tuesday, Jan. 28th. A ten pound girl was born Tuesday, Jan. 21st to Mr. and Mrs. Claus Saathoff living near Diller. Weasel Shipper of the PW F line reserved Tuesday, Feb. 18th for his sale date. Watch for his bills.
Mrs Ed Wolkens was taken to an Omaha hospital last Monday where she underwent an operation. Last report stated that she was improving nicely.
Mayor James C. Dahlman of Omaha died Tuesday in Excelsior Springs Missouri where he had gone for treatment. His body was brought back to Omaha Thursday and funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
Snow drifts have hindered travel for weeks with many vehicles needing shoveling. County graders have cleared main roads, but some side streets remain closed or blocked.
The annual meeting of the lot owners of the Prairie Home cemetery association will be held in the city hall on Thursday January 30 1930 at 2 PM to elect two trustees for four years and to address other business. H K Shutt President Charles E Waggoner Clerk.
Mrs. C E Fairbank writes from Davis California on January 15 1930 to editor Pearce Diller Nebraska noting improved health since moving home and enclosing a $150 check to renew the paper for another year. She sends kind regards to Diller friends and signs respectfully.
A note on spring planting appears as gardeners decide what to sow this year. A ten pound boy was born on the 5th to Mr and Mrs Harvey Powell Beulah Carpenter of Endicott, former residents of Diller.
Sam Stefford of Line farm ten miles north of Diller will hold a sale on February 10. Watch for his bills printed at this office. Miss Mildred Mayborn of Diller, a University School of Music student in Lincoln, performed a pasilude in E flat by Duncan in an organ recital at First Christian Church Lincoln.
Walter A eet, a supervisor, and W. A. Snyder of Diller named census enumerators for Pleasant precinct. Rev Wm R Velte to survey Distribution and Manufactures for the southern half of Jefferson County including part of Fairbury with work to finish by March 15.
A January 17 1930 missive from Mrs A H Kunter of Diller Nebraska to Frank T Pearce notes a $1.50 check for another year of the Diller Record. She reports a severe cold wave in Idaho with temperatures from 18 to 20 below zero that morning.
Mrs S C Moser entertained the N C S A club at her home on Wednesday afternoon January 15 with fourteen members braving extreme cold. After business and roll call, two games were played with Mrs C H Cully winning a prize. Marguerite Velte and Erma Franzen performed piano duets and Mrs Cully a violin solo. Refreshments were served. Mrs E L Loock invited members to an informal social on February 5 to be held at her home with husbands welcome.
Ten Diller students are at the University of Nebraska with three entering last fall. One will graduate in June. Eleanor Diehl plans a piano senior recital at Temple Theatre. Others study in business, arts, sciences, engineering, dentistry, agriculture, and education while engaging in campus activities.
A meeting at Fairbury sponsored by Good Roads and the Farmers Union Co operative Co. of Jefferson County addressed road funding and expenditure. Despite cold weather and blocked roads, a representative turnout discussed plans to speed road building, with a committee to draft concrete proposals. County officials attended and were praised for economy and cooperation as the event aimed to inform citizens on future projects.
Wm. R. V. urges a countywide program to improve all mail traveled roads and gravel connections between towns. A Taxpayers League is proposed along with voting on county bonds for road construction and feasibility of Jefferson County owning a gravel pit. A stronger Vigilance Committee for state legislation is sought and an effort to reduce indebtedness is planned within a year. He asks patience and staying home during mud and bad roads while noting the gravel‑gumbo joke to illustrate the delay.
A daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Weideman Ellis vicinity has scarlet fever. Mrs Wm Glathar and Mrs Sophia Cooper attended the funeral of Velma Ovendon in Elk Creek on Tuesday.
The temperature fell to 23 degrees below zero by 10 o clock Tuesday night, believed to be the coldest reading of the winter so far.
Charles H. Sloan of Geneva, congressman from Nebraska's Fourth District, filed for nomination in the fall primaries, marking the first filing from that district.
Amid heavy snow the week favors sleighing but observers note only two or three sleighs on Diller streets, reflecting a shortage of sleighs nationwide and limited local availability.
Yesterday prices paid for wheat at 1.04, corn 0.70, oats 0.45, cream 0.28, eggs 0.33, heavy hens 0.20, springs 0.13, roosters 0.10. Market report lists itemized rates for local farmers.
A letter from E. S. Dunn of Ft. Collins describes two weeks of subzero temperatures in Dillerite history with the morning thermometer at 42 below zero. Dunn, now living at 331 St. Loomis, references the renewal of the Record in the missive dated January 20.
At the Jefferson County Fair board meeting all elected officers were F. E. Deffer president W. H. Nider vice president C. E. Gilmore secretary and S. C. Hutchinson treasurer. Superintendents named Ed Jones horses R N McCord cattle Charles Coffin swine C M Hurlburt farm products Mrs W H Nider women's departments and Miss Eva Shuman schools.
Mrs M Callander received a letter from her old friend Mrs Harry Allen announcing the death of Rev Harry Allen formerly of Steele City and Congregational minister. He was killed January 11 in an automobile accident at Burlingame California where he and his wife had moved from Redlands after leaving Iowa. He was known in Diller for his frequent preaching engagements.
