Mrs. Ernest Roessler was injured last Thursday evening when she stepped into an open cellar door in the pantry and fell to the cellar floor. Her right shoulder blade was fractured and several ribs cracked, with severe bruises. She is reported to be improving.
Otto Fox visits his brother Will Fox in Superior after a fire burned his clothing from his body. Will Fox was driven from near Byron by Burlington motor car for medical aid and is expected to be laid up for weeks, while Otto believes he may pull through the ordeal.
Wilson of Harbine departs Sunday for Adams Nebraska to assume management of the Aspegain Lumber Co yard. His son stays in Harbine until a house is found. He previously ran Jansen Lumber Co yard and hardware store in Harbine for about five or six years.
Mrs Forsha of Steele City died last Saturday. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Presbyterian church in Steele City with burial in Alexandria Cemetery. Mr and Mrs Willis Clark of this place attended the funeral.
Mr and Mrs Will Pickard and son from Elkhorn Nebraska spent a weekend in Diller to help open the new Diller Cafe. An advertisement regarding the cafe appears in another column of this issue.
John E. Hayworth of Omaha in a short visit with his Uncle and Aunt Saylor near Blair on Tuesday to extend New Year greetings. He left a safety razor as a gift.
Merchants will give out bucks as prizes, per the display announcement about the Wednesday evening movie.
Mr and Mrs Loren Smith and Viola Krebs of Jansen welcomed a daughter on Wednesday December 21 1938 at a Fairbury hospital.
Protestant Orphans Home superintendent Lester W. Schmadhka is spending a week with relatives near Albion Nebraska.
Mrs Frank Grabber has endured blood poisoning in her hands this week after washing a fading garment, a household accident noted by local observers.
The Beatrice rainfall total for 1988 reached 3037 inches, surpassing the 1937 record by nine inches. This indicates a notably wetter year in Beatrice with higher precipitation than in the earlier benchmark.

Survived by his widow and several siblings, Cole died Wednesday when a powered ice truck overturned after he attempted to light a cigarette near Wymore. Relatives from Diller attended, including sisters Bessie Barber, H. A. Bell, Ray Hodson, and W. O. Green.
Miss Elsie Franzen of Steele City returned to her brother and wife Mr and Mrs Onka Franzen Tuesday after a twenty one day stay at Morgan hospital where she was employed. An appendicitis operation caused her hospitalization.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Gore and Mrs Eleene Green left Monday after a ten day visit with Rex and Mrs Green. Bob Green also departed Monday for Lincoln to begin studies at the University of Nebraska.
Dr and Mrs Viers along with Rachel and Serenus visited Lebanon Kansas to help celebrate the 85th birthday of Mr Viers on New Year's Day. All of his children attended the reunion. A fuller account is promised next week.
Steve Merwin formerly track supervisor on the Burlington line and now road master at Wymore is hospitalized at Beatrice Mennonite hospital with pneumonia. Condition this morning reported as good.
Mr. and Mrs. Ward A. Welch have sold the Talmage Tribune to a Mr. Harp and plan to relocate to Chicago. Mrs. Welch is formerly Miss Edna James, daughter of Beckie Diller James of Edgar.
David Wehling son of Mr and Mrs Louis Webhling travels to Lincoln to begin study in scientific farming and machinery at Nebraska Agricultural College on Monday.
Chester Pearson of Steele City was in town this forenoon. He plans to go to St Joseph for a few weeks, citing an infected hand causing trouble.
Mr and Mrs Earl Snyder and children depart from Burlington after a week long visit at this place heading home to Alliance Nebraska.
John Lamb who occupied the Clauson house has moved into Mrs. Susie Brandt's residence in the northern part of town.
Mrs Claude Ellis is reported to be considerably under the weather suffering from a form of rheumatism, with friends and family watching for improvements in her condition.
Allie Eick reports a letter from his daughter and son in-law in Moscow stating no snow and no skating as of December 17 1938. A later note says temperatures fell to 30 below and Moscow froze over, with everyone skating. The piece notes warmth comes from heavy pajamas wool socks wool blankets and fur coats.
Box Holle believes he has more trouble than anyone as mice harass his business. A mouse was found electrocuted after a radio on the counter produced buzzing sounds, with a chewed speaker diaphragm revealing the culprit.
Haddix and his family relocate from Fairbury to Steele City where he resumes control of the Steele City News. He has bought the Rice brick bank building on the south side of main street for a home and business and moved the News office and job printing plant from Fairbury to the new site.
The Diller public school returns Monday with teachers and students full of energy ready for the new term. Examinations loom as the first semester ends next week, and harmony and cooperation are noted in the school community.
The annual meeting of the stockholders will be at Diller City Hall Nebraska on Thursday January 12 1938 at 1 p m for election of five directors and other business. Ben Roelfs president.
Vernon Zeis moved from Lincoln to table Rock Lincoln line as track supervisor. W V Parker, formerly Wymore section foreman, fills Zeis position in Burling ton.
The new automobile test law faced broad opposition as the Nebraska legislature began its session on Tuesday. Locals expect strong pushback against sponsors of the measure. Elmer Campbell of Hollenberg Kansas visited Diller last Friday.
A 12 year old essay on King Solomon recounts Solomon as a wise king who faced a baby dispute and proposed dividing the child. It notes Solomon built the temple and claims he was the father of all the Masons, with 700 wives and 300 "lady friends," concluding with a personal knowledge claim.
J C Tjaden of Vermillion South Dakota thanks Mr Cavett for two copies of the Record and radio publicity on WMAX. He notes news about his father marrying Mr and Mrs Ebe Roelfs and sends greetings. He mentions names Diller Fanders Heinrichs Lottman Park Koons Ida Miller and recalls carrying Dede Fanders as a child and plans to visit Diller after leaving in 1890.
A Steele City man sends his son Stewart in a Buick to deliver a train pass to his wife Anna Earhart. The car skids on loose earth near Hollenberg Kansas and flips end over end, landing on its top. Stewart escapes, the mother is uninjured, and the Buick is destroyed.
Last Thursday Quinter resident Fry lost his Terraplane sedan in a strange blaze. Robert hitched a wagon to the car and pulled toward a straw stack west of the barn. The wagon bogged in deep straw, wheels spun, and the car ignited from the exhaust, burning the auto and straw while onlookers, including salesmen, arrived as the vehicle was consumed.
An early evening collision on highway 77 near midway station west of Blue Springs killed five and injured six of eleven aboard three cars. A westbound vehicle sideswiped a eastbound car on a hill crest, sending all three vehicles into ditches or colliding. All cars suffered extensive damage.
The National Association of Manufacturers reported that real wages in the United States far exceed those in totalitarian nations. It claimed a U.S. factory worker can buy four times as much food and clothing per hour of work as a German worker, nine times as much as an Italian worker, and nearly 12 times as much as a Russian worker.
A 1928 Chevrolet sedan driven by Keith Waggoner and Harold Heorichs with two ladies veered off a village exit in Gilead Nebraska and rolled over multiple times Sunday morning. All occupants escaped with only scratches and bruises as the car suffered heavy damage, described with a rabbit foot joke on the aftermath.
Charley Cully brought a nice fat hen for last Monday's dinner and remained to help eat it. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. John Carico and Mrs. Maggie Remley.
