Mr and Mrs Floyd Hughes lost their automobile from Kerstings garage in Steele City on a Sunday night. Tools and gasoline were taken from the U P tool house. The stolen car was found abandoned on a Crete street after four hundred miles of rough use.
Will Fox a Burlington relief section foreman at Byron suffered severe burns when his clothing caught fire while burning weeds along the right of way. He was taken to the hospital at Superior and is expected to be confined for several weeks. Mrs Fox traveled to Superior this evening by train.
A pine tree sent by Dick Willems, a forest supervisor from Warroad Minnesota, arrived after the Miller family tree was decorated. Mrs Miller placed the remembrance on the Willems family lot in the cemetery as a holiday decoration.
Keith Johnson, a sailor in the U S Navy, arrived in Diller on Wednesday evening from the west coast to spend a few days with his parents Mr and Mrs Frank Johnson and other relatives. He will report back for duty leaving Diller January 2.
Mrs Fannie Eick left Beatrice by bus December 21 for Los Angeles to spend Christmas with her children Mrs Ruth Trout and family and Wilbur Eick and family.
A small frame residence on the Ed Woods property about two miles southeast of Steele City on the river road burned with its contents Wednesday afternoon while tenant Earl Robinson was away in Fairbury.
Word reached relatives at Diller Wednesday evening that Clay Cole son of the late Joe Cole and brother of Mrs Lew Barber of Shea was killed in an automobile crash near Wymore Wednesday afternoon.
The Diller Volunteer Fire Department will present another dramatic production at the opera house soon with Mrs. Scott Miller coaching the cast this year.
Dede Fanders reports a fire starting Monday from a short circuit in a switch attached to woodwork near a double window in his garage work room. Wind from the north aided the blaze before anyone was inside, and a customer noticed smoke. Investigation showed the fire had taken hold in the box window frame.
Wm Pickard of Elk Horn Nebraska gains possession of fixtures from the Green Room Cafe. A more pretentious cafe will occupy the old post office building recently bought by W A Snyder. Mr and Mrs James A Pickard will manage the new business with a formal opening likely next week.
No County Agent Victor M. Rediger has tendered his resignation as county agricultural agent for Jefferson county. He has served the county for three years. The voters turned thumbs down on maintaining the agent by taxation in the November election, and an effort to raise sufficient funds by subscription failed.
Mr. Nelson Ingalsbe of Marysville Kansas band director for Diller and Hanover invited Marilyn and Gloria Miller to Hanover Wednesday forenoon. Marilyn practiced baton twirling at the Hanover location while Gloria assisted with a smaller baton.
Mrs Harry Davis came home to her residence northeast of Diller last Wednesday after visiting in Mazda Wyoming since October with her daughter and husband Mr and Mrs Ruth Bloom.
The thermometer at Edmonton Alberta registered fifty one degrees below zero yesterday. Wind shifted to the north this morning, bringing a brisk change to the weather in the area.
Gladys Lottman reports Bud Grossman has returned to his Portland Oregon home after spending several weeks in Nebraska last week.
The Record notes two golden wedding anniversaries in its pages this week inviting readers to celebrate long marriages. Comment suggests there might have been two or three silver anniversaries as well.
Calvin Waggoner purchases a Chevrolet Delux coupe from Geer Ros, driving it away as a new owner.
A large Fisher family reunion at George Fisher’s home in the southwest part of town dinnering on a turkey meal prepared by Mrs Green. It also marked New Nobesher’s fifth birthday with 38 relatives present including George and Mary Fisher and many of their children and spouses from towns in Kansas Wyoming Oklahoma and Nebraska.
Mrs Matilda Brandt of Powell Wyoming learns by telephone of the death of her three year old son who was accidentally shot Christmas day by his nine year old cousin at the Geo Fisher family reunion. The child’s parents and relatives were gathering at their grandfather’s home for Christmas dinner when the accident occurred.

Henry Diller arrived from Denver last Thursday to spend a few days with his Aunt Fannie Diller and other relatives and friends. He left Monday for home via Torrington Wyoming.
The advertised Saturday night dance has been canceled for a good and sufficient reason by the Vol Fire Dept.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hutchin with their son spent Christmas at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hutchinson in Diller, Nebraska, joining other family members for the holiday.
Elmo and Floyd Hadley, of Williams California, return from a San Francisco fishing trip with a string of striped bass. Elmo limited at five and Floyd four. largest fish weighed fifteen pounds. They fished from a small boat using fresh sardines as bait. The Hadleys planned to visit San Pban siece for Christmas with Floyd and family.
Ethel S Bauquess of Detroit writes she reads the newspaper weekly with old friend Gertrude Diller Bradley. She plans Christmas Eve gathering and says she sang The Messiah with a large chorus and orchestra recently at the Mason Temple.
A personal letter from S P Koons of Washington DC, dated December 20, inquires who has charge of the Jefferson County Record and mentions Park Koons and the 1902 change of paper name to Diller Record. He sends best wishes to friends in Diller and recalls Mrs Line and Mrs L P Raymond.
Mr and Mrs John Carico hosted a Christmas Day reunion with all their children and grandchildren except Mrs Fred Dietrick of Falls City who was ill. Attendees included Mr and Mrs William Carico of Lincoln and daughter Melva with husband, Mr and Mrs Roy Stutzman of Aurora, Mr and Mrs R J Williamson and son Robert of Sioux Falls SD, Mr and Mrs Wesley Carico and daughter, and Mr and Mrs Forrest Brarvan and daughter, all of Falls City.
Mrs Daisy Green answered a telephone at her home on Sunday and spoke with her brother-in-law Rhue Green who was calling from his residence in Los Angeles California He extended greetings to all family members at this place.
Carl T. Curtis Nebraska's 4th District elected congressman will participate in a coast to coast CBS broadcast Saturday December 31 from 4 30 to 5 30 P M est. The program will feature newly elected lawmakers speaking on district and state topics from Washington. Curtis and his wife departed Nebraska December 26 for Washington ahead of the January 3 oath.
