Mrs. Genevieve C. Clark, formerly at the county superintendent's office in Fairbury, began her federal post January 5 as State Supervisor of Adult Education. Her headquarters are in Lincoln and she will travel across the state overseeing and organizing programs.
Henry Huttenmeyer has new duties at The A O Cooper Company of Humboldt. He becomes superintendent of two additional elevators beyond the Diller Odell and Barneston business. Huttenmeyer will split his time among Diller Odell and Barneston, which remains his home. Richard Startling continues to manage the local elevator.
The January teachers examinations will be offered at Normal Training High Schools in Jefferson County on Saturday January 14. Those writing on the examinations at Fairbury will report to the high school library. The mid year examinations for eighth grade students only will be Friday February 3.
Returned from the coast Mr and Mrs V A Raymond and Dickie and Mr and Mrs Jack Calhoun of Lincoln visited Diller relatives Tuesday evening. The Raymonds and Dickie came back last Saturday from a trip to California and reported a most wonderful time.
The Diller Band elected officers Monday evening with Mrs. Ruby Anderson as president Joseph Vanosek as vice president Mrs Ina Viers as secretary treasurer and an executive committee comprising Mrs Mary Cully Ray Green and Wm Weers.
Miss Velma Webling announces engagement to Mr. Harold Cox of Waterville Kansas. Miss Ruth Stahl announces engagement to George Loth of Steele City.
Schultis and Searing hosted a highly successful horse and mule sale on December 22 in Beatrice. They announce another complete consignment sale set for January 28 in Beatrice.
Chas Barber received last week from Victor Rediger the 1938 yields of wheat from twelve state test plots on the Geo Andrews farm near Diller. Harvested early before rust, the per acre yields range from 14.5 to 34.9 bushels with notes that Chieftain record may have an error.
New semester begins Monday January 16. Vocations added for 9th and 10th grades and physiology for 11th and 12th. Agriculture Geography of Nebraska and public school music dropped. New try outs announced for musical groups.
Dr. S. B. Viers sold the E. L. Loock residence to Dr. C. E. Rice of Odell. Rice will likely rent it as a residence, while Viers keeps the garage to move to his western town residence.
Otto Fox visited his brother Will Fox in Superior where he lies in a hospital bed from burns suffered two weeks ago. Otto reports Will is progressing as well as could be expected. Mrs. Fox traveled to Superior Tuesday evening to stay with him for a few days.
William Nies Win Nies age 62 a farm resident near Ellis died Monday night from injuries after being kicked by a horse at a Beatrice area farm where he worked. Several services were held this afternoon at Centenary M E church in Beatrice.
Lew Barber of Shea, severely injured when a roof collapsed and crushed his legs last fall, is able to walk a little and shows steady improvement after a long, hard recovery.
Eph Oaks remains seriously ill at his home west of Diller after New Year’s Day. A longtime asthma sufferer, he is under medical care as his son Alfred Oaks travels from Minnesota to be with him.
Doris Mae Wright files for divorce from Melvin H. Wright in Gage County district court on Wednesday charging striking and other cruelties. The Daily Sun reports the action seeking legal dissolution of marriage with allegations of mistreatment.
George Hudson shows steady health improvement after months since a stroke. Doctors report increasing mobility in the affected limbs and gradual recovery progress.
County officers and their assistants are listed with new officers marked by a star. The text notes equal representation of new and old officers, names several positions including County Treasurer and County Clerk, and cites road patrol appointments in the first district. Grover Grissom was chosen chairman of the new board.
Mrs. Scott Miller announced Raleigh Willems, 18, of Warroad Minnesota, has been named principal candidate for entrance to the West Point Military Academy next July. He is the son of Dick and Mrs. Willems, formerly Warroad Pioneer staffer and Duluth Herald correspondent. Raleigh enlisted at Fort Snelling June 27 and entered army prep school in October. Dick Willems serves as area supervisor for the U S Forest Service. West Point sits on the Hudson in New York.
Mrs. Christie Seaman traveled to Omaha for the funeral of her sister-in-law Miss Rosie Thompson 82 the youngest sister of the late Ben Thompson. Thompson died after two days of pneumonia with services held Tuesday in Omaha. Seaman later visited Lincoln and family before returning home for a chicken dinner at the Sparks home.
The twentieth annual meeting of The Association of Nebraska School Boards and Executives will be held in Fairbury next week on January 17 and 18.
Mrs H A Beil is reported on the sick list for the current week with no further details provided.
Mrs C Steffen led a Fairbury Book Lovers Club group to view The Citadel at the Bonham theatre. The film adaptation of A J Cronin’s novel was chosen by New York critics as 1938’s best and portrays doctors in white with an excellent portrayal.
Russell W. McCreight pledges full cooperation and service as County Superintendent. He thanks the county for their confidence and invites parents patrons teachers and students to work with him. He wishes a pleasant and profitable New Year for 1939.
Mr and Mrs A C Lamel and son Robert left last Friday for San Antonio Texas after spending Christmas holidays with Mrs Lamel s mother and other relatives in Plymouth and visiting Mrs Lamel s parents Mr and Mrs A J Hutchinson. Mrs Hutchinson accompanied them to Texas for a month long trip.

Mrs. S Pheasant died from burns suffered while starting a furnace fire at her home eight miles north of Diller on Tuesday evening January 3. Funeral services were performed last Friday afternoon in Beatrice. She is survived by her husband and three children, with Mr S Pheasant reported seriously ill at home.
Wm. Sandman’s baby is reported ill with pneumonia at their home near Harbine. Mrs. Glenn Long is nursing the case.
A Lebanon Kansas Times report details a January 65th birthday celebration for S B Viers Sr 85 at the Methodist church in Lebanon. The event marked the first family reunion in twelve years with fifty plus attendees, speeches by Viers and others, and a pink carnation decorated dining setup.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Waggoner with Mrs. Smallwood and daughter, visiting the Waggoners in Diller, arrived Sunday evening from Worthington Minnesota to stay briefly with Chas E. and Mrs. Waggoner. They left today to return home.
