Pigs Gain More With Mixed Cottonseed and Fish Meal
North Carolina experiments show pigs fed a mix of cottonseed meal and fish meal outperform those fed fish meal alone. In a 77 day trial with 57 pigs of 85 pounds, group one with half fish meal and half cottonseed meal gained more weight and used feed more efficiently than group two where tankage replaced 40 percent of the fish meal. Profit per pig was slightly higher in group one.

Changing From Corn to Small Grain Advocated
The Kansas farmer urges switching from corn to small grain to outpace weeds. He notes a shift from corn dominance 35 years ago to mixed cropping improves soil turnover and weed control, as delaying plowing after weed seed set offers little benefit.

Feeds for Lambs and Ration Trials
The Michigan agricultural experiment station at East Lansing reports that adding cortisilage to shelled corn and alfalfa hay increases daily gains and lowers cost per pound. Linseed meal with corn silage and alfalfa hay speeds gains and reduces cost per hundredweight. Linseed meal with oats corn silage and alfalfa hay raises daily gains and lowers costs. Barley corn silage and alfalfa hay match shelled corn silage and alfalfa hay in performance. Oats with corn silage and alfalfa hay produce slower, less economical gains.

Silo Doubles Corn Value in McClain County
W V Prewett of McClain County Oklahoma asserts silage from corn doubles its feeding value versus other forms. He built the county’s first trench silo and advocates its low cost and quick construction while preferring a vertical model for later upgrade.

Fertilizers and Soil Health Questioned by Expert
J. Schollenberger of the Ohito experiment station argues fertilizers do not harm soil humus. He notes increased plant growth yields more humus via manure, and lime can correct acidity. He cites nitrate of soda usage since 1894 showing no harm to land over time.

Better Wheat Yields From Alfalfa Rotations in Nebraska
H G Eggert of Thayer County Nebraska reports about ten extra bushels of wheat per acre after a round of alfalfa. He notes the second crop often yields more, but excessive nitrogen can hurt. Eggert rotates crops, keeps a small dairy herd, and stresses early seedbed preparation.

Soy Bean Meal Praised For Dairy Herd Benefits
The Illinois Soybean Marketing Association urges soy bean oil meal use in cattle rations. Harold C. Vial of Du Page County reports herd tests 3.38 to 3.65 percent after feeding soy bean meal in spring and summer 1923, with declines when oil meal substituted. He notes similar positive results in 1925-26 and says dairy farmers cannot do without it.

Keeping Soil Sweet How long lime lasts varies by soil
A Michigan report shows two tons of limestone in 1917 kept soil sweet for 63 years in one strongly acid soil, while another less acidic soil lost the benefit within nine years. Experts advise soil acidity tests seven to eight years after lime application to decide on reapplication, with sweet clover as a sure test.

Farm Hints on Feed Costs and Berry Soil Needs
Grain could offer cheaper feed than legumes this winter. A well kept farm record book helps a farmer manage the business. Blueberries like cranberries need acidic soil and small home plantings can be supported by adding acid peat.
Best To Insulate Hen House Wall
A dead air space between studding in a poultry house wall provides significant insulation and reduces frost on the inside wall. Adding a stiff insulation board and keeping air spaces airtight enhances protection, though it raises cost. Limited artificial heat can be used judiciously to avoid hothouse conditions, says Dakota Farmer.
Grading Pullets by Development for Early Laying
Poultrymen separate pullets into forward developing groups to start laying earlier. By placing advancing birds in laying pens, they receive the right ration and pace, while the rest have more space and feed access. When housing allows, multiple divisions boost overall flock growth and future laying performance.
Winter Eggs Warn On Delayed Pullets Housing
Miss Cora Cooke ex tension poultry specialist Minnesota university warns that delaying housing of pullets until start of laying causes winter and fall melt in egg production. She urges ready clean insulated ventilated houses and immediate placement after laying begins, plus sorting pullets and selling surplus to avoid overcrowding.

Give Hens Real Home
There is nothing that will have greater influence on the poultry raiser's successor failure than the way in which he houses his flock. Birds, no matter how well fed, will not return maximum profits, unless well housed. The poultry house is the hen's home, and to be comfortable and give good production, the house should have proper ventilation, insulation and sanitation, a proper location, plenty of light, be dry, and have ample floor space.
