Diller Schools announce registration for fall term with sessions on September 2 for district 70 and other students, preschool teachers meeting September 1, and classes starting September 4. Senior through freshman offerings include reviews, physics, English, biology, civics, history, and shop. Some sophomores may substitute biology or beginning typing for Jr. Business Training.
Forgotten Nevada trip details reveal Harry Allen and companions misjudged schedule while en route from Salt Lake City to California. A PO card mailed in Utah indicated a California stop that evening, but long delays and Nevada terrain altered their planned timing, arriving in California on Thursday.
A street concert last evening featured a dedication to Mrs Isaac Saylor in her wheelchair for her 84th birthday. The band performed an excellent program and shared generous music, noting residents enjoy these concerts.
A local stand north of the Lutheran church displays a large melon for a guessing contest with a prize of one hundred pounds of melon. The contest closes Sunday evening September 3, with S. B. Viers organizing.
The state convention will be held in Lincolon from Sunday August 27 to Tuesday. A detailed program has been arranged for attendees and delegates.
Mr and Mrs van Wymore of Odell moved into the Hartzell building north of the Record office this week to reside and run an electric and radio repair shop.
Mrs. John Sible of five miles east of Diller died this morning at 3 15. The body is at Wagoner’s Funeral Home for arrangements.
The village board will relocate the public library to the Loock building across the street. The move includes new furniture and winter reading books, plus a reading table for public use. Donations of books or magazines are welcome and membership renewals are encouraged.
Henry Wiemers and Charles Booz depart for Des Moines with 38 Hereford hogs for exhibition and sale. Wiemers has shown pure bred hogs at the fair for years as the Iowa event draws large crowds and spans extensive grounds with camping areas.
The eighth annual band festival will be at Fairbury next Sunday, August 27, with ten bands including Beatrice, Geneva, Marysville, Washington, Salina Kansas, Wilber, Swanton, Plymouth, Fairbury, and Diller. The Diller band starts at 1:00 PM, followed by a mass band and a Lincoln men's chorus appearance in the evening.
The male quartet advertised to perform at the city park on Sunday evening did not appear and the program was called off Sunday forenoon. Chilly weather kept people indoors with a 49 degree low recorded Monday morning. Rev. L J Wolff notes the quartet will appear at the park next Sunday evening.
Wilbur Green and Will Beckman arrange the third annual soft ball tournament at Diller Ball Park on August 28 29 30 and September 1. See schedule in an ad on another page. The events drew strong crowds in the first two years and the Diller band will perform the last two evenings.
The Bonham Theatre will screen pictures of the Diller picnic parade on Friday September 1st. If you missed the event this offers another chance to view the parade. A further announcement will be made next week.
The Diller ball club traveled to Daykin last Sunday for a game that Daykin won by six to two.
County office at Fairbury reports 526 of 622 contacted farmers sign the 1940 wheat plan indicating intent to plant below allotments. Precinct results vary but show high participation. deadline to sign is September 20 or earlier. Compliance only for farms with signed plans.
The second annual Jefferson county exposition will run September 21 and 22 at the county fair grounds with a Fine Horse Show each afternoon and evening. Florence Gardner will manage the horse events including three and five gaited classes and jumpers. Grand champion awards will be given Friday evening. School day parade Friday features globe prizes for entrant floats. Committee chairs list budgets, entertainment, publicity, and grounds.
Mrs. Carl Mueller 66 of eight miles south of Beatrice died last evening at home after a period of poor health. Survived by husband and six children. Sister of Herman Rippe. Funeral Friday at 1 PM from family home and 2 PM at St John’s Lutheran Lanham. Burial at Lanham cemetery. Body at Waggoner’s funeral home.
Former Dillerites share travel notes from Oregon to Banff Canada and West Coast trips. Adeline Kennedy Keith and husband plan to visit Yellowstone Grand Canyon Bryce Zion and Boulder Dam before September 18. Others include Mrs Clark Miller in New York City and Mrs Nell Miller on the West Coast with relatives in Sioux City and Warroad Minnesota.
Four day Gage county fair turf racing closed Friday with 7000 spectators and parimutuel wagers totaling 18534 dollars, nearly triple last year’s 7407. The strong turnout prompts discussion of adding a spring race meeting alongside the August exposition.
Cool weather kept Nebraska residents comfortable with morning furnaces lit on several days. Readings reached 49 degrees on Monday and Wednesday, while rainfall totaled a little over two tenths of an inch. Green lawns pastures and blooming flowers marked the week.
The East End crop under H F Hogue Co contract totaled 114 carloads of green market peas with 261 acres planted. Eastern markets received 110 refrigerated car lots while small lots went to local buyers. The season saw 700 to 1000 harvest workers daily for over a month and about 20 carloads were lost to a hot spell.
The Elmo Hadleys near Williams California report a dry season produced unusually large melons. Mrs Hadley notes that it never rains in summer and one melon weighed 59 pounds with many others nearly as big.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sasse and their son returned Tuesday evening from a ten day trip to Stillman Valley Illinois to visit with Mrs Sasses mother who joined them for a visit. They praise the country and note no crop failure is their export.
Navy man Roe Sparks arrived Monday evening from California for a 30 day furlough from the U S Saratoga to visit his parents Mr and Mrs Chester Sparks and many other relatives.
