The rain arrives after long drought with dark clouds and thunder. A bird, then a torrent of cool drops refreshes the dust and grass. The thirsty land drinks, and the air fills with the scent of rain as corn and pasture await a grateful uplift.
The 38th annual picnic drew an estimated three to four thousand people with 500 plus autos near city park. A 10 inning baseball game 3 2 favored Diller. Parade featured Miss Fayetta Hudson queen and bands, floats, and festive displays.
The Diller picnic parade features a Legion Auxiliary float and Uncle Tom’s Cabin ride, with Miss Donna Hiatt and Clarence Hiatt performing. Prizes are awarded for best floats, including Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Little Brown Church, and the Legion Auxiliary. The second day includes a band concert, pony races, and a massed band of 175 players from multiple towns.
The picnic committee extends thanks to all who assisted in the 38th annual Diller picnic. Credit goes to those with teams, horses, ponies, floats and programs. Many expressions of satisfaction from local and visiting residents honor the organizers.
Official count of the vote for Picnic Queen held Saturday evening July 14 1934 at the city park polling place. Alpha Wiemers and John Greider oversaw the ballot box which remained in their possession.
Mrs. Ed Henricha and Mrs. Loock welcomed their daughter and granddaughter Helen D. Bowdle of Los Angeles California who drove in to attend the Diller picnic. Bowdle left Diller three years ago and will stay for an extended visit in her old hometown.
A family wished to publish a card of thanks after a relative's death and burial but were told a 50 cent charge was required. They deemed it not worth it and no card was published.
Roger Diller misplaced or had stolen his King trumpet after the Odell picnic massed Band program. He has heard nothing from the instrument since.
Will Tinstman and son Arlie and Harry Beckwith returned from Wisconsin where Tinstman owns a dairy herd and farm. He reports good crop conditions aside from hay failure which affects dairy cattle feed. Rain improved prospects. he planned to sell stock but may keep them for winter. They brought back samples of oats yielding 65 to 75 bushels per acre and various vegetables and fruit. Will works as a lineman for Diller Telephone Company but hopes to resume farming in Wisconsin.
A family gathering celebrated Mrs Lizzie Greider turning eighty eight on August 8 with children grandchildren and others in a serene country setting. The tribute lauds her modesty and long devotion to family while expressing hope for future health and visits. Ice cream and cake followed the late evening event with special mention of Mrs Ott Fox.
Junior boys from Congregational and Methodist churches staged a lively softball game at the city park last Saturday night. The Congregationalists won 10 to 8 after a game full of hits and home runs, drawing praise for spirited play from spectators.
Rev Merle Fish of Los Angeles called at the office on Tuesday forenoon. his contribution to a years subscription for the Record pleased the publishers. Rev and Mrs Fish Sylvia Miller and sons had moved from Diller for a picnic and returned home yesterday.
The Diller picnic is noted for rain and this year proved the rule. Last Sunday evening .60 of an inch fell and on Wednesday morning the first day of the picnic .40 of an inch more rain arrived.
