Frank Sible 69 died at Odell hospital last Saturday after a stroke. A longtime implement dealer and old settler east of Diller, he leaves a son and two stepchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Lutheran church in Odell.
Mrs. Roy Roelfs accompanied her son Leonard and wife Maxine of Omaha to Excelsior Springs Missouri last Friday to visit Roy Roelfs undergoing treatments at the Ball Clinic. They report him improved and able to get around without crutches and expect to return home about August 26.
Mrs. M Callander left Sunday for Lincoln to visit relatives then proceed to Denver where her son Lloyd will meet her and drive her to Durango Colorado to live with him and his wife. She sold her personal property at private sale. The Callanders long resided in Diller and were prominent in that town.
Mrs Rev W H Clark was called to Alexandria to accompany daughter Mrs Sinn to Grand Island where she underwent removal of tonsils. The Sinnos plan an August 21 sale and then move to Spokane Washington to join Rev Clark's youngest daughter.
Wm Mudge remains about the same at Odell hospital with daughters noting gradual weakness. Johnny Behrends, just inducted into the army, is at Camp Wheeler Georgia. Bernard, called at the same time, was deferred due to being over 28. Rev and Mrs Hall left for Association Camp Estes Park Colorado for two weeks in their mountain cabin.
Mr Henry Weaver suffered a severe heart attack last Friday night and is described as improved. Dale Engleman, 12, underwent a tonsil operation at a Beatrice hospital last Friday. Diller Public School set to open Monday September 1. Methodist ice cream sociable planned on Main Street the last Saturday night in August.
W A Sneyder Arthur Grone and Charley Cully attended the funeral of Frank Sible held in Odell on Tuesday afternoon reflecting on the local community gathering.
J. Smith Diller hosted a Sunday chicken dinner with family members including sons Dr Aubrey Diller of Indiana University Blooming-ton and Mr and Mrs Robert Diller in the FBI service at Chicago, plus his sister Miss Fannie Diller. Dr Aubrey and Miss Fannie left Rock Island Fairbury at midnight for a vacation in San Diego California. The aunt may stay in California with her brother L Roy Diller. Robert and his wife arrived last Thursday and plan to spend part of their vacation at Diller occupying Miss Fannie Diller’s residence.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Madden and Mr. Will Clark returned to Colorado last Sunday after a reunion picnic with longtime local friends and relatives. They visited sisters Mrs Fouts and Mrs Seaman and others, and Mrs Christie Seaman joined the party to visit her brother in Boulder.
Two rural women Mildred Krebs and Merilyn Lottman were drafted to drive large trucks delivering shelled corn to local elevators. The story notes their role in handling 1939 government stored corn and contributing to national defense.
Rev. L. J. Wolff hosts his younger brother Fred of Sterling Nebraska who has enrolled as a student in Airbury Junior College. The first term begins in September and Fred will spend weekends with his brother in Iller.
Mr and Mrs Max Logan and Laurice Diller traveled to Denver last Friday and toured Colorado. Max and Mrs Logan returned home Wednesday evening while Laurice Diller stayed in Colorado to seek climate relief for asthma.
The Diller High School class of 1936 held a reunion on August 5 with three attendees Don Maw Harry Beckwith and Gretchen Fanders. The trio searched for their vigil box but after about an hour of digging they forgot which tree marked the spot.
The social event planned by the Dorcas Society of the Methodist church for August 21 has been indefinitely postponed. The party may be rescheduled at a later date. Mrs. Clark, President.
Bert Ewers traveled from Fairbury by train Tuesday to see the farm south of town after a period away during the hot spell. He noted the cooler weather and wanted to check on conditions firsthand.
County Agent Frank Flynn announced health champions for Jefferson County. Top three girls were Ruth Linderman of Fairbury, Rozella Portwood of Gladstone, and Gladys Strothman of Daykie. Ruth Linderman is eliminated for not meeting State Fair rules, so Rozella Portwood will represent the county. Top three boys were Earl Schwison of Powell, William Swindler of Fairbury, and Stanley Ahrends of Diller.
Sunday visitors Mr and Mrs Herbert Barber and Garnet and Mr and Mrs Willis Clark and Petty traveled to Scribner on Sunday morning August 10 and spent the day with Rev Mr Pyche. Mrs R W Green accompanied them to Lincoln and to the Veterans hospital where her husband is. Ruth earned a master's from the Soier city Colorado and plans to teach in Lincoln schools this coming year. The group enjoyed the hospitality in the Pyche home and on the return trip with R W Green.
A letter from the Lloyd Hurst family states they arrived safely in Los Angeles with no delays or car trouble. The address listed is 3769 South Van Nesse Avenue.
Mrs. Ouke Franzen of Steele City visited Dr. Ellis this forenoon for tooth ache she says turned into a headache.
A morning headline claimed the national debt grew in six weeks to a total that, if printed as one dollar bills, would stack to five miles high. The statement highlights rapid borrowing and the administration's fiscal stance.
George Armstrong supervised contests at the park, with Richard Miller Roger Diller Donald Roelfs Gerald Weaver Roy DeShazer Hubbard LeRoy DeShazer Chasdick Gloria Miller Ruth Nelson Joan Pingel and others earning prizes in bicycle and foot races and a school girls event. The event closed with a planned prearranged meeting next picnic year at the Methodist parsonage and a gathering of old Zion neighborhood residents.
Mrs Elizabeth Fouts and her daughter Averil hosted a seven o'clock breakfast at their home last Sunday morning. Guests included Mr and Mrs Robert Diller of Chicago Dr Aubrey Diller of Bloomington Indiana and Miss Fannie Diller of Diller. The Dillers were leaving that evening for the west coast and Miss Averil will soon begin school work in Spokane Washington.
Mr and Mrs Virgil Geer depart on a Saturday night motor trip to Warroad Minnesota to visit Virgils sister Mrs Hazel Carpenter and family He plans to try fishing holes his father spoke of Mrs Cora Colman cares for the Geer children at home during the trip
Mrs W H Caman dies at home in Beatrice after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at Centenary Methodist church where she had been an active worker. She had lived in Beatrice since 1904 and is survived by Mr Caman and two children.
Diller fellows report meeting Dr Joe Bixby at Beatrice yesterday. He attends the Fillmore county fair which convenes soon. The Geneva fair features pair mutual races.
Mrs L H Findling has stayed with her daughter and new grandson in Conrad Iowa for about six weeks and expects to return soon from the Dale Friday home.
Marilyn Miller 14, sponsored by Campbell Cline American Legion Post 349 Steele City, wins open class baton twirling at Hastings state convention beating 11 entrants from Omaha Superior Kearney Red Cloud and more. Her victory makes her eligible for the Milwaukee national contest in September and leads to further invitations.
