Rex Green and local committees have prepared a 100000 word history of Diller arranged into thirteen chapters for a 400 page book. Estimated price not to exceed 150 dollars, with financing via underwriters or advance sales. A typewritten copy will be shown at the picnic stand.
Mr Carl Stange of Neillsville complains his Record was missing and asks for news on rain in the area. He recalls drier conditions since leaving and notes the region has become dry. Mrs Griswold visits the Tristmans in Sheldon while Miss Ruth Stahl visits Sheboygan relatives and jokes that Lake Michigan seems a huge pond. They plan to stay several weeks longer.
Mr and Mrs Joe Madden of Potter Nebraska and Mr and Mrs Harry Nelson and Earl of Big Fork Montana visited Lawrence Madden and family and A T Nelson at Ellis. They left Monday evening by Nelsons car for Potter to visit relatives before returning to Montana.
Mrs Montgomery of Pickrell, reputed Gage County's oldest citizen, turned 97 last Sunday. The Sun notes she received thirty four visitors at her home and praises her as a small active and charming lady enjoying life in a fine Pickrell residence.
The event follows the Diller picnic with Odell hosting on Tuesday and Wednesday. Officials promise an excellent program and many Diller residents are expected to attend.
R. E. Clark, who sold the Odell Oracle and bought the Kevesaw Nebraska Progress, has sold his paper and plant to Roy Garrison of Washington DC. Garrison will take possession on September first.
Rev. Durkhoff of Johnson Nebraska formerly pastor of St. Pauls Lutheran church here visited Monday to see former parishioners. He is recovering from a nervous breakdown.
All teachers have been secured to fill the Diller public school faculty. We shall publish the complete list at a later date. Any previously published list is incorrect.
Mrs. Margaret Albers traveled from Beatrice on Tuesday to visit relatives and friends in the area.
The station broadcasts Travels of Mary Ward at 8 45 AM on weekdays offering a period voice travelogue style segment.
The Diller District No 70 board approved a WPA school improvement plan costing 2465 dollars with 1756 funded by federal support and 709 by the district. Work started last Friday and includes furnace and coal room rework, lowering floors, cement floors, tile coal bins, sewer relays to prevent freezing, new foundations, tree removal, grading, drainage, and walks, with completion aimed for September 7 and school opening.
Ensley Carmichael son of Archibald and Elizabeth Spark Carmichael was born in Green County Indiana April 1 1865 and died August 10 1986 at his daughter Mrs Perry Weaver home aged 70 years 4 months 10 days He married Lizzie Gerard April 25 1888 and had eight children Ella Witty Flossie Vance Mrs Alfred Sisk Mrs Perry Weaver Alfred and Ethelbert Three children preceded him in death Survived by 21 grandchildren Funeral services were held at the Methodist church and he was buried in Prairie Home cemetery Gifts of prayer and memory accompany the family through this sorrowful time the text reflects faith and solace in God’s house with many loved ones awaiting reunion.
Tuesday night at the local arena a crowd of about 200 watched Junior Boys action where Steele City led 11 9. In the men's game Steele City scored 11 while Diller added 3 to finish 15 11 for Diller. Management had tickets printed to cover expenses with nickel admissions.
Mr and Mrs C A Jackson of Martinsburg Nebraska are guests of Supt and Mrs L F Sinkey. The ladies are sisters and the visitors plan to stay about a week before heading to Kansas and then home where Mr Jackson is a school faculty member. He recalls Steele City residents from his boyhood.
A noon Wednesday blast at the Grainger Brothers warehouse on 8th and P caused three deaths and multiple injuries. Harry K. Grainger is among the seriously hurt. The blast is blamed on a refrigerating plant leak undergoing repairs.
Cecil Hellenborn of Holdredge Nebraska attempted to wreck the Burlington's first Zephyr near Holdredge by wiring two angle bars to the rails. He offered no reason beyond being mad at the railroad company.
The report notes that the proposed Jansen jail has not yet been christened as no inmate has been locked inside, with discussions about naming it after the first person confined there.
The committee thanks donors supporting Diller’s 40th annual picnic and asks anyone missed in the canvas to send contributions via W. B. Anderson. Local contributors include Cornbelt Lumber, Diller Elevator Co, Farmers Co op, Clark’s Store, Diller State Bank, Allen’s Store, Green Room Cafe, Hutchinson, Moser & Green, and others.
The Diller fair opens with Orendo the magician performing blindfolded car driving at 6 30 PM on Saturday and balloon ascents by Ryan each evening around 7 00 PM at City Park. Governor Cochran speaks Friday at 7 15 PM. A new dance platform and bands from Lincoln headline daily shows with many amusements and concessions.
Mr and Mrs Henry Wiemers and daughter report a warm welcome on a west coast trip from San Diego to Oregon. They note steady business along the coast, many Midwestern visitors in Oregon, and new buildings rising at about one per mile. An Eugene relative showcased the country revealing a current boom compared with two years ago.
Mrs. Clarence Hiatt and Mrs. S. Miller report cats in their daily menus munching grasshoppers. Clark and Pettie counted 19 grasshoppers in a spring fryer’s crawl. Mrs Willis notes a quirky, fishy tale that some call true.
Plymouth residents packed the town for a successful picnic with larger attendance than ever before. The area buzzed with cars and amusements as rain earlier did little to dampen spirits, with folks returning Friday night for more fun despite muddy roads.
The Farmers Union picnic is announced for Fairbury City Park on Thursday August 20 featuring speaking events, races, sports, and a Plymouth band with dinner. Everyone is invited to attend.
Welcome Home W A Schindler arrived from Omaha Sunday evening and stayed overnight as guests of Seegenindiog and Mrs Sinkey. They unloaded at the Cavett residence where they had lived before moving last spring. Mrs Claudia Schindler was elected to teach English and music after B Marie Hanson’s resignation. Mr Schindler plans to attend the University of Nebraska next term as several faculty resignations were filled. There is statewide talk of difficulty filling vacancies due to teachers scarce and many marriages.
Central State Broadcasting announces Diller will be honored on the Jerpe Farm Service Quarter Hour Saturday August 15 over KFAB Omaha and Lincoln. The salute includes city activities and achievements as part of the Time and Tunes program with Lyle Deloss. The 7 am broadcast runs Monday through Saturday on KFAB.
James Wrigley of Muskogee Oklahoma arrived Monday at the home of his nephew John Wrigley and a family near Har vine. He has been traveling in the west for several months. He formerly engaged in banking at Harbine and helped organize the first bank there with Chas Sandman.
