Pioneerestival Draws Large Crowds at Diller Opera House

A big crowd attended both sessions of Pioneer festival at the Diller opera house on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Six schools performed though Steele City withdrew its choral groups due to the instructor’s illness. About 180 students participated. the Diller school thanked the M. E. church ladies for meals.

Weaver Family Phone Call About Son's Transfer to Utah

Mr and Mrs Perry Weaver received a Friday phone call from their son S Elc Doyle and wife of Shoemaker California that Doyle was being transferred to Clearfield Utah for service. His wife will also go to Utah to be near her husband.

Lloyd Lamb crafts a necklace and bracelet set using shells from river beds. The licks and clasps are fashioned from florin coins pounded and shaped with crude tools by Lloyd.

Elllie Army Pair Spent Three Days Together During Transit

Sgt John Mathias and Pfc John Cook of Ellie Montana traveled together in India while assigned to air transport command. Mathias served as a mechanic in the air corps and the two served in close company for the duration of their three day stay.

Harold Allen Writes Interesting Letters From Germany

Harold Allen describes life on occupation duty in Germany in March letters to Mrs Cavett. He mentions a birthday party, homey meals with coffee and eggs, music from records found in houses, and escaping the war’s sounds for a while. He notes a six room house with running water, blooming trees, and churches, while reflecting on German attitudes toward Hitler.

Library Notes from Annual Meeting Report

At the annual library meeting held in the library room on April 2 the secretary noted 2915 books on hand with 66 bought and 5 donated during the year. The librarian reported 3428 books loaded that year and the treasurer showed 27.98 on hand April 1 1944 receipts of 104 05 and expenses 98 08 leaving 83 95 on hand April 1945. Dr C Ellis resigned after five years as library board president and the following officers were elected for the coming year President Mrs Scott Miller first vice president Mrs C Hiatt second vice president Mrs Ob V Fanders secretary Mrs Ira Casper treasurer Mrs C Weaver Mrs O J Mayborn was appointed librarian.

Memorial Services For Robert Lee Hiatt

Memorial services for Robert Lee Hiatt USNR son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Hiatt were held at the Methodist church with Rev W H Clark conducting. Hiatt, born May 1924 near Diller, died on a ship in the southwest Pacific January 7 1944 of wounds from action. Burial at sea near Lingayen Gulf followed a brief service. a later memorial service was held January 28. Readings and tributes recalled his upright character and service, with many friends in attendance and honors paid by shipmates and community.

Doane Doane Day Observance At Congregational Church

Doane Ranyers with two carloads of Doane students and Miss Gertrude Hap ford of Lincoln are expected at the Congregational church next Sunday April 15 for Doane Day activities. A special covered dish luncheon will be served in the annex Sunday noon.

Diller High School News Highlights From Jefferson County Meet

Diller high school entries topped regional results as Naomi Snyder Diller won first place with 17 points at the Jefferson County Pioneer Conference declamatory contest in Daykin. Freitag Hubka and Miller earned superior ratings in oratorical and dramatic divisions amid 26 entries from six schools. Seniors received name cards and announcements as the group rehearsed for upcoming events, including a kitten ball practice with 30 girls and production plans for Foot-Loose sponsored by Mr. Ludington. An educational film night on April 24 at the high school gym, presented with the United States employment service, invites the public. Nearby social notes cover visits from Sgt. Elmer Duis and others, plus Navy man Bob Maw and family during leave.

Happy meeting in New Guinea between service members

In New Guinea a reunion is described in a letter from Pfc Lloyd Lamb noting Darrel Beckwith, a lieutenant and mail plane co pilot, was located on the island. Liocyd found him and they spent many pleasant hours together as reported by Lloyd.
