Behrends Son Reported Prisoner of War in Germany

Mr and Mrs Wm Behrends receive a card from their son Sgt Edward Behrends missing since last November. The note says he is a prisoner of war of the Germans at Stalag 12. Edward enlisted in 1942 and went overseas in March 1944 serving with the 859th Infantry.

Village trustees and board of education elected in Spring Election

Village election at City Hall on Tuesday April 3 elected two trustees John Buttenmeyer and Bert Weave to two year terms and two school board members Dr Fanders and J Smith Diller for three years. A vacancy will be filled by E J Weigle. Election officials included Mrs Moser Bert Frisbie Sam Woods as judges and clerks Mrs Frances Broadstone and Mrs Clifford Blauser. Meanwhile Pvt Frederic Kroetch ing Wrigley in Biloxi Mississippi reported to Kessler Field for Army Air Forces tests to train as a cadet and pilot candidate with medical and psychological exams and classification tests to assign him to air crew training pathways.

Air Medal Awarded to Lt Dale Garrels at Abilene Field

Lt Dale R Garrels receives the Air Medal with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in a Easter Day ceremony at Abilene Army Air Field Texas. Col Harry Weddington presents the medals and lauds his valor while Lt Col Eugene F Elliot reads the citations for meritorious achievement from 52 sorties in North Africa Sicily and Italy. Overseas service from April 1943 to January 1944 included Sicily Salerno invasions and air combat yielding four confirmed victories. He is an instrument instructor at West Texas combat crew training and resides at 1272 Locust St Abilene with wife.

Box Holle has taken over the Viers Store after purchasing it weeks ago and Dr. Viers, the veterinarian, has moved his office into the building he recently bought from Alfred Drexler.

Changes In Assessment Methods Noted By County Official

County Assessor J Axtell says changes this year include two-call rule for precinct assessors and separate blank schedules for farmers and town residents. If the owner is absent on the first visit, a notice is left and the assessor will return. if the second trip fails, the burden falls on the taxpayer to file. Both spouses will be assessed for old age and disability, covering adults 65 and under not receiving aid. A A Bick starts work as Pleasant precinct assessor after appointment last week.

Mrs Virgil Geer and Son Return From South Visits

Mrs. Virgil Geer and her son Stanley returned home from Valdosta Georgia after visiting her brother Keith Waggoner and wife. They spent time in Gulfport Louisiana with Virgil Geer, who had overseas duties and recently arrived safely in England. they also visited Savannah and the Atlantic Ocean.

Weather Reverses Spring Bloom in Nebraska Heartland

Springlike warmth in Weather Well Nebraska spurred early blossoms and fruit hopes but a cold Monday and rainy Tuesday followed by snowfall blanketed the countryside. Frost and ice lingered while efforts to protect trees included bedding and clothing. John Steiner was seen placing overalls on a blooming plum tree, though no protective red flannel was noted.

Easter Services Bright with Flowers and Remembrance

Easter services last Sunday featured beautiful decorations of potted plants and cut flowers. Many flowers were gifts from soldier boys to their mothers. At the Congregational church a lily was given by Mrs Hall in memory of her late husband Rev R D Hall former pastor of the Diller Congregational church.
