Miss Donna McGovern and Miss Margaret Clennan nearly drowned Sunday when Jim Miller leapt in fully clothed to rescue them. The two girls, wading near the Nussbaum farm area at Alvis War Ou, slipped into a nine foot deep hole and were saved after sinking three times.
The Dalton Garden Club will meet for a garden party at Mrs. William Williams's home from 2 to 4 P.M. on July 1, 1948. The Specimen committee asks members to make a corsage. Mrs. Abner Kaufman, Regional Director, will be the guest speaker.
The Dalton Fire Company answered two calls in the past week. Friday a blaze damaged the front awning at Thompson's Store but firefighters quickly tore away the burned section and doused the fire. Sunday at 10 the Riggsby family left a roast cooking on the gas stove while at church. the roast was removed and the family returned to find hamburg meat served instead.
The 4 H Stitch and Chatter Club met June 24. Members pledged baked goods for a bake sale July 3 at the town hall one o clock to raise funds for sending several girls to 4 H camp. The next meeting is set for July 1 at the high school.
Dalton’s gravel streets and alleys oiled last week. H H Weimer’s phone number changes to 5061. James Bolender family moved to Jonas Eberly place near Pokeberry. Community Club meets July 14, second Wednesday. Fred Fahrney plans August 8 Switzerland trip with three others. Russell Denbrook burned palm in car pulling out burning battery cable during short circuit. Read Romantic Rebels The Fabulous Chaflin Sisters and profiles of Ohio bred Victoria and Tennessee Chaflin.
Charles C. Myers of Hemet California visits relatives in this community as a guest of the Carl Weisgarber family. He is convalescing from a serious operation and travels through Ohio in 16 days, visiting interesting places en route. Myers has long been a Gazette reader since its 1875 founding.

Miss Violet E Villard and Cleon F Brenneman wed in a double ring ceremony at the Christian and Missionary Alliance church Orrville on Saturday June 12 Rev W D Lindsay officiated Organist Ivan Ober and soloist Mrs Ralph Gonter gave a 20 minute music recital A reception followed at the bride's parents home The Brennemans now reside in a Massillon home built recently
Miss Nadine Amelia Moser and Robert L. Arney joined in marriage at the Salem Mennonite Church on June 19. Pre nuptial music was played by Mrs. S C Springer and the Salem Girls Chorus under Victor Gerber. The Rev A S Rosenberger officiated before about 400 relatives and friends. they plan to live near Dalton after a short wedding trip.
Della Lucille Nussbaum daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam E Nussbaum Apple Creek R D wed Clayton Geiser son of Benjamin F Geiser of Grrville R D at Son nenberg Mennonite Church Sunday afternoon June 20 Rev Louis Amstutz conducted the ceremony in front of about 500 relatives and friends A large altar arrangement of white gladioli and baby’s breath adorned the chancel Parkview Melodians from Eastern Mennonite College Harrisonburg Va provided music The newlyweds will live with the groom’s father and farm upon returning from a week in Canada.
Mr and Mrs Ward Butler of Manchester stay with Mrs Kath ryn Mentzer. Mr and Mrs Jack Caldwell and children of Brewster visited the Caldwell Haney home Saturday. Mr and Mrs Russell Vernon and daughter of Massillon were guests of Welker Mumaw. Carrie Schultz of Wooster and Durbin and Harry Schultz of Akron joined Mr and Mrs Wm Blethyn Sunday. Linda Stranger three of Massillon cut her arm climbing a tree at the Wm Merriman home Sunday.
The 11th Regiment band, directed by Don Hunsberger, performs Saturday night at 8 30. Note: rehearsal next Tuesday night July 6.
WFEW announces a two day carnival and homecoming on July 28 and 29 at Dalton Memorial Field. Prizes include an 8 ft Deluxe GE refrigerator on July 28 a 1948 Chevrolet Aerosedan on July 29 and a bride doll with trousseau. proceeds go to Dalton Post 5534 Veterans of Foreign Wars building fund for a community building with meeting rooms banquet hall dance floor auditorium and library.
Mrs. Betty Zaugg was appointed V F W Ladies Auxiliary color bearer for District 6 at a recent New Philadelphia meeting and honored at a Massillon luncheon. District officers from Massillon were also recognized and a gift from the Dalton auxiliary was presented to Mrs. Zaugg.
The Dalton V F W Ladies Auxiliary solicits pies and cakes for a carnival on July 8 and 9 at Dalton Memorial Field. Donors should bring baked goods to the Methodist Church basement in the afternoon of July 8 or 9. A Sterling bread truck will transport items to the field. donations may be arranged by calling Mrs. Yeaman.
The Saturday event by the 11th Regiment Band drew strong attendance with proceeds to fund benches near the band stand. The group thanks the School Band and donors, while unclaimed plates or pans await pickup at Goudy’s store.
Vern Hoobler and Ed Hazel travel in New York City this week. Miss Harriett Fletcher of Warren visits in the Lloyd Poorman home. Mr and Mrs Charles Dusenberry of Zanesville guest of Mayor Clarence Kraus and wife. Mrs Allen Coffman and son Richard return from Chicago relatives. Mrs Edith Bloss and children visit Jasper Gardner home in Toledo. Miss Mildred Santschi returns from Athens Ohio UK conference. P B Horst and daughter renew Gazette subscription. Amstutz Myers wedding at E Chippewa church with Arlene as maid of honor. Russell Thompson and daughter Arlene attend birthday dinner in Akron honoring the latter’s mother.
Thomas E Dewey of New York and Earl Warren of California were nominated at the Philadelphia convention to head the Republican ticket in the coming presidential campaign.
Pastor Rev Lester E Flauhaus returns from the North-East Ohio conference at Jakeside and is re appointed to the Dalton and Burton City charges. Regular worship services are set for Sunday morning.
Tax books for Dalton and Sugar Creek Two are at First National Bank for collection and close July 20. Pay before this date to avoid penalty.
Miss Marjorie Steiner will spend the coming week at Little Eden Camp in Onekama Michigan.
The Federated Circle Class met Thursday evening at Mrs. Morris Hershey home with 30 attendees. President Mrs. D R McAfee led, devotions by Clyde Wenger, and a program featuring piano duets, poems, readings, and vocal numbers with prizes awarded to Mrs Lee Douglas and Mrs Clyde Wenger.
In loving memory of our dear husband and father Lewis Hauenstein who died June 29 1946. The heaven's gates opened as the Master's voice said come home. Not forgotten on earth you remain with us as precious memory. Missed by Mrs Lewis Hauenstein and family.

Wm Smith and his wife are spending a week in Lewisville for vacation. Jack Cotterman and wife from Newark are guests of James Gano and family. Mrs. Arthur Young and her son Tommy of Canton are staying with Mrs. Ida Haney.
