The Gazette announces a Cutest Children Contest in Dalton Town Hall on Monday July 19 from noon to 7 PM. Children under ten are eligible with no charge to parents and no subscription required. Two photos per child will be published in a future Citizens of Tomorrow feature.
Burton Gibson, aged 75, died Tuesday at 1 30 p m from a heart attack at his Dalton home. He taught school in Dalton area, worked for the Great Northern railroad in Montana, and lived with his sister Mrs Roxy Farmer. Funeral Friday July 9 1948 at 2 30 p m at Stockham funeral home with Rev L E Flauhaus. Burial in Dalton cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday and Thursday evenings 7 to 9.
Oliver Homan a cemetery custodian was found unconscious in the cemetery around 7 o clock after failing to return home for supper. The attack likely occurred about 4 o'clock and may have been heat caused or a light stroke. His grandson Ronnie Bucklew suffered ptomaine poisoning at the time. He is very ill and confined to his bed.
Paul Deterich of this place will be the new mail carrier on R. D. No. 1 beginning July 16, succeeding D L. Zuercher.
A report notes the July Fourth heat reaching 98 degrees the hottest in half a century. A birth is recorded in Dalton with a daughter born to Mr and Mrs Edgar O Ross at Massillon city hospital. An operation for double hernia was performed on Mr I Glen Berg at Aultman hospital Canton.
Miss Marjorie Lucille Sprunger and Kenneth Wayne Gerber wed at St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church Mt. Eaton on June 27 in a 400 guest ceremony. The couple, both Dalton High School grads class of 1942, plan to reside with the bride’s father in Kidron after a eastern states honeymoon.
Miss Arlene Steiner daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Steiner Apple Creek RD and Mr Irvin A Nussbaum son of Mr and Mrs Amos A Nuss Kidron were married at Steiner Nussbaum wedding at Kidron Mennonite Church officiated by Rev Reuben Hofstetter. The couple plans a Niagara Falls honeymoon and will reside with the groom family.
John Geiger a 75 year old farmer died Tuesday at his home north of Kidron after weeks of illness. Born in Berne Switzerland he moved to Sonnenberg at age eight and lived there since. Survived by widow Elizabeth a son Adam of Apple Creek four daughters Lydia Rosina Mrs Clyde Bixler RD 2 Wooster Mrs Lester Schaller RD 2 Orrville a brother Noah RD 2 Orrville and six grandchildren. Funeral Friday 10 am at residence and 10 30 am Kidron Mennonite Church with Revs. Hefstetter Bixler and Zuercher officiating. Interment in church cemetery. Body to be moved Thursday from Desvoignes Mt Eaton funeral home to residence for viewing.
Mrs. Stella Grace Zaugg 54 of Orrville died July 3 after a heart seizure at her home near Dalton. Survived by husband David W. Zaugg two daughters Mrs Ralph Weidman and Mrs Paul Lytle a son Glenn a father Otto C Saurer four brothers and two sisters and two grandchildren Funeral services at Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church Orrville with Rev O C Gerber officiating Burial Westlawn Cemetery Mt Eaton Desvoignes Funeral Home in charge.
Reuben Welty 68 a retired farmer was found dead by a neighbor at his home one mile south of Kidron around noon last Friday. Authorities suspect heart attack after six months illness. Survived by brother Daniel of Kidron and sister Mrs Daniel Bixler of Seville. Funeral held Monday at 9 a.m. at residence and 10 a.m. Sonnenberg Mennonite church conducted by Rev Louis Amstutz assisted by Rev Jacob Neuenschwander and Rev Jacob Moser burial in church cemetery Desvoignes funeral home in charge.
Harry H Brillhart 62 died at home on June 28 in Elyria after a two year illness. Born February 10 1866 in Dalton he lived in Elyria since 1909. An electrician at National Tube Co for 39 years he belonged to Lake Ave Congregational Church. Survived by wife Esther and three daughters.
The Big V F W Carnival opens tonight July 8 with performances by the Navarre high school band and Ira and John's Rube Band. An 8 ft G E refrigerator will be given away and prizes include a Chevrolet Aerosedan for first and a 20 inch doll bride with trousseau for second. Dalton School Band and 11th Regt Band also participate.
The Dalton VFW Post 5534 auxiliary met at Town Hall with President Florida Yeaman presiding. Details include a new hot plate purchase, membership approval for Gloria Acres, and a two day carnival July 8 and 9 run by the auxiliary with a cats stand. Plans noted for a Cleveland baseball game July 31 with Massillon Auxiliary.

Mrs J N Moser delightfully entertained at a surprise birthday party honoring her daughter in law Mrs Richard Moser. Guests from Smithville Wadsworth and Dalton attended. Delicious hot chicken sandwiches ice cream cake candy and coffee were served.
Pleasant Valley Church announces its annual homecoming on Sunday July 11. Morning service at 9 30 then a basket dinner at noon followed by an afternoon music program at 2 o clock. Everyone is invited.
