A 106 foot mast has been erected for a wireless telegraph station to receive messages from the Nantucket lightship. Ground connections involved eight heavy metallic plates, each 2.5 by 8 feet, driven into the ground.
Experiments by Mr H Janssen on Mont Blanc show snow acts as a strong insulator so wires can be laid on the surface without poles in snow covered regions. The trans Pacific cable will span about 8 000 miles from San Francisco to Manila via Honolulu and Guam and is being built by American electricians.

Wellsville Ohio January 16 The grand jury in Lisbon indicted D Brookman manager of the Wellsville plant of the American Sheet Steel Co on the charge of discharging Leonard Shaffer an employee Shaffer joined the strike last summer to ally with the Amalgamated association He was rehired after the strike but Brookman later asked for his union card and Shaffer refused leading to his discharge
At the annual meeting of the Canton Aron Street Railway Co most officers and directors were re elected. John C Welty said dynamiting frozen ground on Uniontown hill could have made the line ready by March 1 if a temporary injunction against dynamite use persists the work will be delayed and excavations halted until spring
A Cincinnati nurse attempted suicide by gas after leaving a baby with a domestic, then the infant died by hanging in the cellar. the nurse is not expected to recover. In Toledo, Louise Avery aged 23 killed herself with a shotgun after a failed marriage proposal. A freight wreck near Palestine killed William Stoffel and injured several others on the Pittsburg Fort Wayne Chicago line.
At the annual Miami Cycle Co meeting yesterday former Congressman Paul Sorg was elected president. The report cites bicycle factory counts showing U S bicycle manufacturing declined from 248 factories on January 1, 1900 to 69 on January 1, 1901 and 24 on January 1, 1902, a more-than 90 percent drop over two years.
