A careful audacious train robbery occurred near Branchville South Carolina on the Southern Railway. Eight men loitered on the platform and fired on the engineer John Reynolds before forcing the express car crew to open the through safe. The robbers fled with the local safe and possibly the through safe, led by a man believed to be Barton Warren.
A January 28 blaze in St Paul destroyed the Davidson block at Fourth and Jackson, a five story brick structure in the wholesale district.
