Special to the HERONITE. St. Paul Minn January 16 Seventy five persons were killed when giant powder exploded during a fire at a Butte Montana hardware store The blast wiped out the entire fire department and debris flew as far as a half mile The destroyed property totaled about one million dollars
The ninth annual meeting of the Woman's Missionary societies of the city met January 10 at 2 30 p m in the Baptist church with Mrs R M Keyes presiding A large number of ladies attended The secretary reported last year s meeting and it was accepted A motion to reorganize the group by adding a president was approved Mrs J S Oliver was elected president The program included papers on Indifference to Missions Core a Our opportunities and What Shall the Harvest Be along with solos and singing The session closed with heartfelt remarks and a rousing a Blest be the tie that binds a final note of satisfaction over a successful year. The Houghton Fire: near Cas Houghton farm six miles south of the city a barn and stock sheds burned early Friday The fire destroyed sixteen horses four cows 200 chickens two hogs farm machinery and tools four harness sets two wagons a buggy a sulky forty tons hay and feed The loss is about 4000 insuring on the barn covered part of the damage Origin remains unknown though suspected arson.
Postmaster Cogan received orders from F. H. Jones to discontinue the free mail delivery here on the evening of Tuesday January 15. All letter boxes and carriers satchels are to be sent to the St. Paul postmaster. The action surprises local officials and applies to offices with annual receipts under ten thousand dollars.
Notice states the partnership Robinson and Graley is dissolved by mutual consent with Robinson assuming all liabilities and authority to collect accounts. Debtors urged to settle with him. The Grace Episcopal Church Ladies' Guild of Huron publishes The Cook's Friend a hundred page collection of receipts and household tips. It covers bread soups fish oysters meats and many desserts and beverages. The volume aims to aid homes in Huron and beyond.
