Anthony Hemminger reports dire conditions among Sioux at Sisseton and Wahpeton. Tribesmen lack food clothing and funds. no interest payments have arrived since last July though $1,699,000 was deposited 25 years ago. Chiefs seek overdue interest and portion of principal to survive winter.
J C Whitney aged 80 and a pioneer of Olmsted county was found dead in his yard in Stewartville Minnesota. Death caused by heart failure.
London reports indicate J T M Pierce’s frauds may total 8 million with forged bonds and tax deeds. Receipts in his London office exceeded 100000 weekly and possibly 500000 in a single week. victims seek silence to avoid ridicule and credit damage. Claims totaling 1 404 000 are held by Pierce creditors, listing Bedford Belfast Glasgow Huddersfield Fagan Johnson and others.
Campbell's name was raised at the judiciary committee meeting and consideration postponed for one week. A canvass of Democratic senators reportedly shows a majority against confirming Mr. Campbell.
In Audley Staffordshire a flood trapped miners at Diglake colliery. About 150 underground workers were saved while 60 to 120 others remained entombed as rescuers battled shifting water and timber debris. Volunteers from other pits aided the perilous operations.

The total net tons of freight through the St. Marys Falls canal for the year ending Dec 6, 1894, from Apr 17, 1894, totaled 13,195,860. The freight value was about $146,114,502. Passengers counted 27,236.
Officials of the Burlington road and Adams Express company in Orrumwa Iowa have offered a 1000 dollar reward for the capture of the train robbers. No new developments have been reported in the case.
Mil waukee January 16 Fire gutted the Stadt theatre interior during preparations for the annual charity ball. Decorations were destroyed and the theatre, plus guest club rooms, suffered heavy damage. Loss is estimated at $55,000 with several offices and stores also affected by water and smoke. The charity event is postponed.
In Minneapolis on January 16 Detective Benson from Duluth and Miss Olsen, Lena Olson’s sister, left to pursue Austin, the murder suspect. They believe Austin is hiding in Chicago and aim to identify him, aided by Miss Olson who knew the man well.
Miss Ida Trembling and Miss Mollie Rodgers drowned after breaking through ice while crossing the river at the Calhoun club house in Haron Illinois. Frank Phillips of Hamburg narrowly escaped drowning while attempting rescue. Bodies recovered.
On the Court street line 20 cars ran at regular intervals guarded by two to eight policemen. Strikers or their friends obstructed tracks with ashes, but power house laborers cleared the rubbish and a mail car ran at 7:24 with six mounted and eight unmounted policemen, through a district where strikers were reported more reckless, yet action appeared to deter further lawlessness.
Miss H A Oakes of a rural area near La Crosse Wisconsin swore before a justice that she was drugged and married to a man named Drugan whom she had never met on the 23rd of last month. He kept her prisoner for four days and she escaped to return home. Officials have searched for Drugan but he remains at large.
The house and senate held a joint executive session as Attorney General Crawford requested power to act against W. W. Taylor bondsmen in other states. He reported a telegram listing W. W. Taylor on the Persia passenger list from New York several days earlier.
The Pall Mall Gazette reports grave fears for the Nansen Arctic expedition. Lieutenant Hovgaard of the Dimphna wrecked in the Kara Sea says the Fram is crushed in the ice and that Dr Nansen and his party are retreating, a view echoed by Arctic voyagers in Britain and Scandinavia.
In Exopora, deposits of clay suitable for pottery and fine table ware were discovered. Expert judges deem the clay equal to renowned North Carolina sources and of national repute.
The eastern portion of Kittson county has formed the new Rosseau county. Elected officers include C. A. Government lands in Cavalier county North Dakota suffer timber depredations. A communication from Assistant Secretary Hamlin to Acting Interior Secretary Sims requests action. The interior department lacks a special agent there and the attorney general is asked to have the U S marshal arrest trespassers and seize the timber.
Georgia dispatched a 12 car train loaded with food and clothing at 8 p m from Atlanta to Lincoln Nebraska in response to Nebraska's appeal. The special freight run aims to break distance and schedule records westward.
The house committee on Indian affairs voted to report Delegate Flinns bill opening the Wichita Indian reservation to settlement. About 1,000 Indians own nearly 1,000,000 acres. Wichitas would receive 160 acres each while the rest available under homestead laws at $1.25 an acre.
Representatives from nearly all charitable lines in Minnesota gathered at Unity church for the third state conference of charities and correction. President R A Mott opened the meeting and delivered the inaugural address. Samuel R Thayer of Minneapolis followed with a paper on The Charities of the Netherlands.

Miss Laura Dutcher of Newcastle Nebraska and Clyde Eves of Vermillion South Dakota skated into an air hole and drowned in Vermillion. The bodies were recovered.
The secretary of the interior has approved clear lists totaling 54,967 acres in the Seattle and Clearwater land districts. These lands are granted to the State of Washington for public building purposes.
