Clermont County Commissioners Approve September Bills

Clermont County commissioners met in Batavia with Ezra Seyler and Frank Willis. They read and approved minutes and authorized warrants for extensive payments across WPA projects, roads, equipment, and payroll. Low bidders were announced for several road contracts with firms including Clermont Construction Co and Gerald Iles.

Our Sycamore Tree Remembered by Batavia Garden Club

Mrs P Gunderley documents Batavia centennial tree planted in 1820 by Benjamin Hopkins. The Sycamore stood through 1828 courthouse scaffolding and 1986 rebuilds. 1847 Clermont Boys of Ohio Volunteers formed nearby under its branches, with Captain Lowe and officers sworn in. Tree listed by Archaeological and Historical Society and American Forestry Association.

Squirrel Hunter Fatal Shot During Opening Season

The squirrel hunting season opened with many hunters in the woods. Merriam Ludlow, 14, of Withamsville was shot in the back at 6 15 am on Route 125 by an unknown hunter. The bullet pierced a kidney and a doctor from Amelia was summoned. No arrest reported.

Grand Jury Meets Oct 5 in Clermont County

The Clermont County Grand Jury will convene in Batavia on Tuesday October 5 to hear evidence in eight cases five of burglary assault and larceny and criminal attack. Hutchinson Slow Recovery From Dental Surgery

Clermont County commissioner J M Hutchinson of Marathon remains in a Christ Hospital room for ten days after a jawbone operation linked to an infected wisdom tooth. Drunken Driver Charles Thompson Arrested and Fined

Charles Thompson of near Bata via was arrested Saturday night for operating an auto while intoxicated for a second time in two weeks. Sheriff Atxier processed him after ditching his cat. He faced Squire Wise map Monday, fined 100 dollars plus costs, and jailed 30 days with sentence suspended and driving rights revoked for one year. He is a father of several children.

Aber Chosen School Head for Hamersville Schools

Bertram Aber was selected by the Clark Township Board of Education to head the Hamersville Schools for 1937-38. A Mt. Orab native and Miami University graduate, he comes from Troy where he taught mathematics. He succeeds H. D. West, now county superintendent, and will assume office immediately.

Delayed Checks To Be Released Soon

The Ohio division of aid for the aged plans to mail September pension checks by October 10 after hiring eighteen more workers under Governor Martin L. Davey. Chief Examiner George Harris says delays were to conform to Federal Social Security laws, with the federal government paying half the pensions. He notes the delay has caused hardship and that efforts are underway to speed payout.

Forger At Work In Batavia Warrent Out

Batavia saw a man signing as Earl Benge pass a ten dollar pencil check to Rice's Grocery. Rice alerted Deputy Brooks who chased a false tip toward Cincinnati. Benge allegedly fled, with a warrant issued in Batavia on Monday. He previously served time for murder in Ohio Penitentiary.

The retiring president Norman Schoeffler served ten years. The group exceeded its National Education Fund quota and reported a membership gain. Milford Marshal Joe Pierson Found Guilty in Assault Trial

A Clermont County jury of twelve found Joe Pierson the Milford marshal guilty of assault and battery after a May 31 stone throwing incident near the Newell home in Milford. Sentence was deferred pending his appeal filed Friday with the Clerk of Courts.

Ely Butler Vows Sealed Saturday in Bantam Wedding

Miss Jessie Butler 32 daughter of the late Abner Butler of Bantam and Dale Ely 40 of Bantam were quietly married by Rev C N Fisher at 2 p m Saturday in the Bethek Methodist parsonage. The couple plan to reside at Bantam after the first of the month.
