Veterans Hold Meeting of Ohio Civil War Veterans
More than 200 members of the pennyate Ohio Association of Civil War Veterans attended the annual meeting in Milford yesterday. Officers elected: Pres. Courtland Smith, VP Edward Baker, Sec Izetta Smyser, Treas David Irwin. Next year’s session planned for Milford on Sept 20, the sixty first anniversary of Chicamauga. Weather forced adjournment to the Family theatre and Masonic hall dining room after dinner. Speakers included Daniel Hall, Daniel Wilder, Edmund Burd sall, and E B Holmes. Curtis Williams led Civil War songs.

Bata Loose Leaf Tobacco Warehouse Sold to Pool
After days of bargaining between the Burley Tobacco Pool and private parties the Bata Loose Leaf Tobacco Warehouse changed hands to Pool members or the Ohio Tobacco Warehouse Co. The sale initially fell through over basket ownership but a deal was eventually made with former sheriff's sale buyers taking on responsibility to finalize the sale and prepare the house for this fall's large crop.

Jenkins Held for Grand Jury in Morris Murder Case
Frank Jenkins of Portsmouth was held to the grand jury without bond after a Tuesday hearing before Judge Will P. Stephenson in West Union. John Spires, jailed for Morris murder, testified Jenkins killed Morris. Spires refused to answer during his preliminary hearing. The case goes before the grand jury on October 1. In Batavia, a nighttime fire and explosion on Main Street drew crowds as rumors swirled about a cannon shot torpedo or plane incident, but no injuries were reported.

Tobacco Damage From Frost Hits Bottom Crops Hard
A heavy frost last Friday damaged most tobacco in the bottoms and injured top leaves, preventing upright curing. Upland fields escaped mostly intact. The record large acreage makes harvesting difficult and families, including wives and children, assist with the crop to save it from frost.
New Method For Curing Tobacco Reported
Tobacco growers discussed a novel curing technique at the Courier office. A farmer described finishing green or undercured tobacco by sealing a barn and placing anthracite coal fires beneath the crop for several days, creating heat to perfect the curing process. Some Hast Fork raisers reportedly use this method to double crop value.
