Eight Clermont Subdivisions Vote on Local Option Question

Clermont county will vote on local option in eight subdivisions at the general election November 8 if petitions approved. Four townships Williamsburg Batavia Monroe Goshen and four corporations Felicity Williamsburg Batavia Amelia seek liquor elections with Batavia also targeting hard liquor only.

Batavia Grange to confer third and fourth degrees

Batavia Grange will confer the third and fourth degrees on a class of candidates on September 15. The refreshment committee asks members to bring sandwiches and coffee will be served. Marie Henke, Secretary.

St Philomena Church Annual Chicken Dinner Set in Stonelick

The St Philomena church announces its annual chicken dinner to be held Sunday September 18 in the church basement at Stonelick. Dinner costs 50 cents and will be served by church ladies from noon to night with amusements and refreshments for all.

Newtonsville PTA to Hold Fried Chicken Supper

The Newtonsville P T A sponsors a country fried chicken supper in the school lunch room Saturday night September 17 serving from 5 to 9 o’clock. Menu includes fried chicken mashed potatoes gravy beans slaw salad bread coffee and pie priced at 35 cents. Proceeds aid a worthy cause.

Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Company held its annual picnic Saturday afternoon and evening at Fulton’s Grove near Williamsville with a large crowd. Legion Officers Elected Last Week in Batavia

The Frank W. Weaver Post of the American Legion in Batavia elected officers for 1939 at its regular meeting. William Brossart was named Commander, William Murray Adjutant, and Sidney Vaughn Finance Officer. Installations and district conferences are planned with events in Batavia on October 26 and 30.

Drivers' Licenses On Sale Sept 15th New Licenses Issued

Frank West state registrar announces new auto licenses on sale from September 15 to October 1 with a 40 cent fee for standard licenses and 90 cent fee for chauffeur licenses. Those under 18 or new applicants receive 90 day temporary permits requiring a future examination to qualify.

A flower show is planned in the Amelia School Auditorium on Saturday September 24 from 2 to 10 PM. J R Carlisle chairman invites exhibitors and announces free admission with refreshments. Exhibits must be in place by 11 AM.

G O P Platform Convention Set for Columbus

Clermont county Republicans are urged to attend the state platform convention in Columbus on September 14 and 15. John Martin and Lena Kearns announce the event and call all municipal township and county officials and party members to participate. Amelia School Opens With Major Upgrades

Amelia schools opened with record attendance and major improvements in facilities. Most bus routes now use new buses for safer transport. A Steam Table was added to the cafeteria and the fourth grade room received new desks. Rest rooms for boys and girls were built into the building at an estimated cost of about 2500 dollars, enhancing convenience and sanitation.

Batavia Public Schools Open Monday With 600 Enrollees

The Batavia Public Schools opened this week with about 600 students. Over 300 elementary pupils registered and the high school enrollment neared that figure. The freshman class is 68, the largest in school history.

Mt Carmel crowds discuss $7,500 bond for new school

An enthusiastic Mt. Carmel meeting led by the Board of Education debated a $7,500 bond issue to fund a new district school building. County Supt. Frank Hoggatt outlined need and a federal PWA grant of 38,500 was noted. Architect James Stewart presented sketches and Frank Roberts covered legal aspects.

D A V Chapter No 68 Forms in Clermont County

Clermont county Chapter No. 68 of the Disabled American Veterans held a well attended meeting with five applications, three for life membership. George R. Fout of Cleveland, State Commander, praised the swift organization and spoke on veterans affairs. Invitations to join remain open until Saturday noon. Next meeting set for Batavia Armory on Monday night October 10.

State Highway Department Unable To Fund Batavia Street Project

Unofficial sources report the State Highway Department will not cover its $38,000 share of Batavia Main Street work. The village cannot finance the project alone, so the matter is put on hold for later consideration.

Reds Set for Crucial Season Finish With Pirates Series

The Cincinnati Reds plan a late East swing to decide the pennant race. After trips to Brooklyn Philadelphia and Boston, they meet the Pirates in a four game set at Crosley Field starting September 30 with three more in Pittsburgh and St Louis to follow. Judge Hess Speaks At Bethel Church In Ohio

Judge Otis Hess of the Cincinnati Municipal Court addressed a capacity audience at Bethel Baptist Church on The Other Side of Life. He warned that the crime bill costs $2.50 weekly per American and urged parents to educate and involve children in church and Sunday School. County Treasurer John Friend Jr. introduced him. music by a Milford quartet and county men's chorus accompanied the service. The benediction was offered by Rev. A. L. Althaus.

William DeVore barn in Hamersville destroyed by lightning during a severe electrical storm. Fire department fought to stop the blaze from reaching the nearby house. Total loss estimated at 2500 dollars.
