In a regular meeting the Clermont County Commissioners voted to apply for 29627.32 dollars as the county share of a 6 million dollar state appropriation for emergency veteran housing. No final use set yet. Milford plans temporary units.
Miss Stella Biswas of Calcutta, a member of the Bengal Secretariat, is visiting Batavia. She has stayed with the Elmer Kramer family since August 28 and plans to travel through the United States to observe education and democracy before returning to India. She aims to encourage women's education where literacy is very low and hopes to speak to local groups, possibly Rotary, in October.
A 1846 archive note reports Army of Invasion volunteers grumbling at sutler charges. A private laments wages at seven dollars a month and whiskey at one to two dollars per gallon, with other necessities priced similarly.
Henry Chittenden presented the Grant birthplace cottage to the state and General Bushnell accepted for the people. A large crowd witnessed the ceremony as the cottage was to be placed in Columbus amid loyal, loving residents.
Harley Russ of Batavia found a large 80 pound animal in fields near Batavia last Thursday. He identified it as a badger native to Asia and believes it escaped from the Cincinnati Zoo. Officials were to view the creature in an iron cage after a wire was secured.
Lena Menefee and Martha Taylor take a lunch break while aiding Mr. Lee Menefee and Jerry Shinkle in painting Owensville School. The project prepares the building for the delayed opening scheduled for September 9th.
The Clermont Sportsmen and friends will meet at the Clubhouse for an all day basket picnic. A full program includes games for all, children’s contests, and a special ballot casting contest for sportsmen.
The American Legion and Auxiliary prepare a 6 p m potluck dinner and frolic for Saturday September 14 with baked ham from the Legion and salads sandwiches cake and pie from the Auxiliary. The mid month Legion meeting is set for September 18 at Kettler's Grill Route 174 near Summerside.
Marilyn Barber of Felicity Ohio has enrolled as a freshman in the College of Nursing and Health at the University of Cincinnati as announced by Dean Laura E Rosnagle Miss Barber is a 1945 graduate of Montreat North Carolina High School and daughter of Dr Cecil F Barber Felicity Ohio
A two day cushion repair school was held in Hillsboro for Home Demonstration Agents. Anne Biebricher of Ohio State University led the lab to teach techniques for repairing spring filled cushions, with four agents including Jos May Warner from Clermont County. Warner plans to organize local repair labs and homemakers may contact the Batavia Extension Office for instruction.
Soil Conservation District Supervisors from nearly every organized county in Ohio returned home last week with new information and a commitment to advance soil conservation programs in their counties. George W. Schafer, a local farmer and district supervisor, relayed the outlook.
The Burdsall Chapel Homecoming was held at Marathon on Sunday September 8, with attendees observing the traditional service and community gathering.
Milford doctors Warren E. Thomas and W. P. Cameron assisted by county health nurses examined 14 first graders and preschool children at Miamiville Elementary for weight height eyesight heart throat and vaccination status. The effort involved teachers parents and pupils and covered Milford and Mulberry schools.
A temporary Clermont County fire protection group formed at Batavia Court House on September 6 to coordinate 13 community departments. Assisted by Assistant State Fire Marshal Charles R. Scott, Gerhardt H. Ratermann of Williamsville Fire Dept. was named temporary chair. A nominating committee to report September 18 will set up a permanent organization. Departments include Ame rica Batavia Bethel Felicity Loveland Miamiville Milford New Richmond Newtonville Neville Owensville Williamsburg Williamsville. Surplus war materials are sought by smaller communities to bolster equipment. Mayor A C Munden called the meeting attended by about 50 people.
A bomb casting was found on the James Long farm between State Routes 128 and 133 in Deerfield Township. Sheriff Clyde Dericks and Deputy Marvin Bissantz removed the missile to Batavia, with Wright Field experts classifying it as a test bomb likely dropped during a practice flight. No markings or charges were located, but a search continues for nearby explosives.
September set for viewing a proposed public road in Batavia Township as Clermont County Commissioners consider turning the Hitch cock Lane right of way into a public road. The 25 yard extension lies beyond the Amelia corporation line after property owner petitions.
Members of the Clermont County Farms Bureau traveled with Batavia Bethel and New Richmond Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and their spouses last week through Southern and Eastern Clermont visiting farms to promote cordial farmer business relations. William Trotter, driver for Danbury Service Station, died when his truck was hit by a freight train five miles west of Brooksville Indiana at 5 15 on Wednesday September 4. He lived in West Union Ohio and was un married. Funeral services were held September 7 at a West Union funeral parlor.
County Game Protector Edgar Anstaett and Harold Grant arrested George Hammonds of Lockland on September 7 near Loveland for possessing a squirrel out of season. Hammonds paid a $100 fine plus $4.70 costs after appearing before Justice W. A. Sanders. The week’s arrests reached three. Nelson McCoy and Virgil McCoy were each fined $100 and costs on September 1 for similar violations.
The 1947 drivers licenses go on sale Monday September 9 at 11 deputy registrar offices countywide. Licenses expire by midnight September 30 and a 1946 license is required to obtain the new one. A flower show sponsored by the Fortnightly Club will take place in the School Auditorium in New Richmond on September 20. Entries are accepted from 9 a.m. and public viewing runs 3 to 9 p.m. Classes will be announced in next week’s paper.
Mr and Mrs Erwin Kain returned Sunday night from a ten day trip through the East. They attended the 37th Division Victory reunion at Toledo from August 31 to September 2 and then went to Boston for the National VFW Encampment held September 1 to 6. Mrs Helen McHugh and son Thomas of Mt Auburn visited Mrs Ruth Nash of Mt Carmel on Sunday.
