Batavia Public Schools Open with Strong Enrollment

Batavia public schools opened on Monday with a first class enrollment and a new building serving as a drawing card for outside pupils. Supt H B Hamilton arrived last week and has the year well planned, with teachers listed for High School Intermediate and Elementary grades. Our new superintendent H S Hamilton is a polite gentleman and well prepared for the task. He graduates Valparaiso University and Cumberland University and did education work at Miami University Ohio State University and Columbia University. He has rural school experience and was superintendent at Coulterville Illinois for two years and led Felicity schools the past two years.

Mrs Frank Titus Dies after Illness in Cincinnati

News of Mrs Frank Titus death reached Batavia via Sunday morning. She died in Cincinnati at 2 a.m. Sunday after illness that followed a hospital visit with her husband and son. An operation for peritonitis was performed after midnight in Cincinnati. She leaves a husband and Frederick a son, and many relatives. Funeral held at home Monday. She was a Batavia native and Batavia school graduate.

Farm hand dies after alleged train strikenear town

Tom Bailey about 35 a farm hand employed by John Baha south of town was found unconscious near the brickyard beside the N and W tracks on Sunday morning. He suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw and other injuries after being struck by a train during the night. He died about 11 o clock. His body was prepared for burial by Undertaker Moore. Tom Bailey formerly worked for Tom Garrison of Modest and came from Lisbon. His funeral expenses were borne by Tom Garrison.

Friday night brought one of the area’s heaviest downpours lasting four hours. rainfall ranged from 3 to 5.18 inches with severe impact in southwestern Hamilton county and flooded cellars and gardens in Fern Bank. basements flooded as sewers overflowed and winter fruit crops were damaged across the district.

Pioneer Benjamin Harrison Moyer Dies at 94

Benjamin Harrison Moyer longtime Clermont county pioneer died at 94 after a brief illness at his son Chas Moyer’s Pleasant Hill home. He lived mainly around Afton and spoke on 19th century inventions. Funeral was at Afton M E church with burial in Williamsburg cemetery. Seven children survive him.

Resignation of Amelia Superintendent Surprises School

Patrons of Amelia schools were surprised when Supt. John Slye handed in his resignation just before opening on Monday morning. The resignation was accepted immediately and Prof. Smiley, a near resident, was employed. Schools were opened and the new work of the year began.
