Miles Deal, appointed February 9 1917 by Judge N Young, says he can run the office cheaper and with less notoriety. In six months he investigated 38 homes involving 70 children for mothers pensions, placed 10 in permanent homes, saving the county over 3000 dollars weekly. He handled 18 delinquent cases, 10 settled out of court, and moved three lewd women from the county. His six month expenses totaled 70.40 dollars. He uses his own automobile on official business and minimizes witness counts to cut costs.

The food administration set 1917 wheat at 2.20 a bushel to lower bread prices with a 14 ounce loaf pegged at five cents. A license system would regulate flour and bread dealers. Congress fixed 1918 wheat at 2 per bushel. Grangers of Ohio, about 70 000 strong, backed 2.20 while the state fair members approved 2.11. The era of 1 wheat is over.
