Island Queen explosion survivor credits harrowing tune

Cecil Wallace of Amelia credits hearing the horse and boogie recording while ashore from the Island Queen before its Pittsburgh explosion. He narrowly avoided the blast as bandmate Clyde Trask was injured and most gear was lost. Wallace expects two more weeks before the band resumes.

Republican Women Meet September 15 in Clermont County

The Clermont County Women's Republican Club will meet Monday September 15 1947 at 8 pm at the Mt Carmel Glen Este school in Mt Carmel Ohio. Speaker will be Mr Chas Jones president of the Ohio League of Young Republicans. Entertainment includes group singing a piano solo by Mrs O W McBride and an accordion duet by Richards and Phil Philhower.

Juries for October Term to Be Drawn

Clermont County Jury Commission will draw grand and petit juries for the October term at 9 a.m. September 17 in the Clerk of Courts office. Commission members are Mildred Sellers and Carl Burger.

Amelia Defeats Batavia Independents to Win League Softball Title

In Batavia at the school grounds a softball tournament final Saturday evening saw Amelia defeat the Batavia Independents to cap the event. The tournament continued league play from early summer and aims to raise about 250 from gate receipts to fund ongoing recreation programs. Roy Ayer of Mt. Washington supplied lights for night games and may provide them again next season. Local backers hope for a permanent athletic field with lights, funded by future gains.

Clermont County Fair Board to discuss building program

The Clermont County Fair Board will meet at 8 p.m. Friday September 12 at the Owensville schoolhouse. President Frank Schubert says a permanent building program will be discussed.

Lydia's Dry Goods and Dry Cleaning Opens in Withamsville

A new shop named Lydia's Dry Goods and Dry Cleaning opens in Withamsville to serve residents. It is operated by Mrs. Lydia Brummett with husband David Brummett running another local business. The Brummetts, formerly from Cincinnati, have lived in Withamsville for three years.

Field Day at County Experiment Farm

A field day for soil conservation district cooperatives and veterans taking on farm training will be held Tuesday Sept 16 at 10 a.m. at the Experiment Station on Route 50 near Owensville. Dr D R Dodd and Dr R E Yoder of the Ohio Experiment Station will discuss recent experiments and developments. Attendees should bring lunches and notify the County Agent before Tuesday to ensure guides and speakers are provided.

Owensville Builds Local Fire Department Truck

Owensville moves to establish a village fire department with a new Ford truck purchased from Lewis Motor Sales Batavia. A body is being added to the chassis and war surplus pump ladders and equipment are being installed. The truck carries a 400 gallon tank and will serve Owensville Stonelick Township and Monterey. Funds remain to complete equipment payments.

Water Plant May Be Built For Amelia Area

The Amelia area considers a new water supply with a proposed plant near Amelia to serve the village and surrounding communities. Engineers favor drawing from the Lower Branch of East Fork with purification and infiltration facilities to meet future growth. A mass meeting at Amelia School will let residents hear engineer explanations and funding details via bonds with no tax increase. Tom Dix of Amelia leads the citizen group backing the plan.

Veterans Council formed in Clermont County

A new unified organization, The Clermont County Veterans' Council, formed Aug 20 to coordinate local veteran units. It will meet 8 30 p m on the last Wednesday each month at Bethel American Legion Hall Mt Holly. Represented groups include American Legion VFW Spanish American War Veterans and Disabled American Veterans.
