Clermont County Fair Closed With Record Attendance And Large Exposition

The 42nd Clermont County Agricultural Society fair ended with record crowds of about 10 000 daily, over $4365 receipts, and a grand display across departments. Notable entries included Miss Stone and Miss Mary Tice in flowers, J.R. Ross & Brothers fowls, E. Hulick and Mrs. Titus in dairy and needlework, Griffin’s buggy displays, and a large fruit and grain show, with praise for management and grounds security.

Butter winner earns carriage at Boston Fair

Mrs Minna Spencer of Goshen township travelled to the Boston Fair with five pounds of butter and won an eighty five dollar carriage from the Davis Carriage Co. The prize was awarded amid ninety other ladies competing, highlighting women’s role in dairy trade and Mrs Spencer’s success with Jerseys from her farm.

Sam Brown Tow Boat Narrowly Survives River Fire

The Sam Brown, a large tow boat, caught fire near our landing about three o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews on board struggled as steam and smoke enveloped the vessel, but water suppression quickly stopped the blaze and the boat resumed upriver under cover of steam.

River Honeymoon Ends in River Tragedy Near Lawrenceburg

Four young Cincinnati guests on a honeymoon shanty boat drifted to Lawrenceburg Indiana on August 24. Billy Fee disappeared after a river crossing while John Keys and Bert Rusk were implicated. Billy Fee’s body later identified. Mrs Keys arrested briefly. Keys and Rusk remain missing as Thomas South faces arrest for involvement.

Wild runaway horse causes near miss on Batavia road to fair

A frightened horse pulling a cart on the Amelia to Batavia route bolted near the railroad bridge. Stephen Nolan was thrown out while Harvey Becket suffered a deep head gash and body bruises as the animal fled two miles to Glancy’s Hill. Crowds on the fair road witnessed the dramatic escape and the damaged cart was left wrecked near Main street. Also mentions a Des Moines man praising Chamberlain’s remedy for colic and diarrhoea now sold locally by Dr. John Bunn and Irwin and Cobb.

Clermont County notices a Clermont Agricultural Society board meeting in Owensville on Saturday afternoon September 18 1860 to adjust all premiums and accounts. The Boston fair gate receipts noted as 2808 75 with excess over 1886 high water mark.
