Growth and inns shape Amelia long before autos
Growth brought lawyers and transport needs to Amelia as roads and turnpikes emerged. Early attorneys Townsley and Leeds helped organize the town, while turnpikes from New Richmond and Batavia connected Amelia to Cincinnati and beyond. Rail and interurban lines followed, bringing passengers who waited at depots, rode the blackline, and paid fares as high as 50 cents round trip. Inns and hotels flourished along Main Street and Ohio Pike to serve travelers, with the Hessie and Offutt houses among the lasting names in a village midway between New Richmond and Batavia.
