Batavia 125th Anniversary Parade and Events Start

Batavia marks 125 years with a three day celebration starting Friday September 15 1939. Art Morgan leads a city dance at Batavia High School Auditorium followed by Bataviana exhibits at the Armory and a Saturday parade ending with a Home Coming program and evening pageant. Sunday features a village worship service at the school house auditorium led by Rev. E L Smith.

Williamsburg man in farm accident injures hip and thigh

Russell Smith, 26, of Williams burg Rt. 2, was struck by a harpoon hay fork that came loose from its carrier. The fork penetrated eleven inches into his right thigh, cutting a groove in the thigh bone. He was taken to Dr. Carl Min ning and was reported recovering as well as can be expected.

The Annual Homecoming at St Andrews Church is scheduled for Sunday September 10. Milford fried chicken dinner will be served from 12 noon to 7 pm with adults 50 cents and children 25 cents. Lawn entertainment follows in the afternoon and evening with hourly attendance prizes. A Plymouth Tudor Sedan will be given away in the evening, viewable at Sam Bateman's service station.

Ohio tightens liquor permits to curb evils of prohibition

State Liquor Director Jacob Taylor reports 25 850 permits active in July, down from 27 614 last year as Ohio shifts to a state monopoly approach. No new permits in over quota areas. licenses expire and numbers fall. Six months into the year 698 permits canceled compared with 382 a year earlier. Local option bans cover 3893 townships and towns. To place a 3 2 beer vote petitions must reach 82 percent of area voters. whiskey 15 percent.

New Hope Eliminated From League Race in Early Round Shakeup

In the fifth round of the Elimination Series six teams remain as New Hope exits the race. Batavia crushed Amelia 21 to 6 with Batavia right fielder Carter racking up four hits and Ed Kinner adding three. Newtonpville beat Goshen 7 to 4 to stay in contention as Amelia and Batavia prepare for a rematch next Sunday.

Ohio employers with 1937 1938 unemployment tax delinquencies may save money by paying in full by October 9 as grace period credits against Federal taxes end. If unpaid, they face double payments to state and Federal government. Payments due dates were Jan 30 1938 for 1937 and Jan 30 1939 for 1938.

Clermont County Fruit Growers Tour At Bolender Orchard

The annual summer tour of the Clermont County Fruit Growers Association will convene Saturday at 10 a.m. at the J. J. Bolender and Son Orchard one mile west of Felicity. Attendees will view apples, watch a grading demonstration, see a new storage house, and enjoy a noon basket lunch before talks by Frank Beach and C. C. Allison of Ohio State University. Speakers include Merrill Rooster, E. L. Carter, and Roland Rogers. The program covers Clermont County fruit growing issues with a full morning of demonstrations and discussions.
