Moscow man ends life after wife leaves in shock

John DePue, 23, of Moscow, killed himself after wife left him and filed for divorce. A coroner verdict cited a note to his mother and stated he could not live without her. He had been fined for assaulting his wife days earlier and the couple married three months ago at New Richmond.

Thefts Reported By Exhibitors At County Fair

Several Owensville Fair exhibitors reported losses including 200 feet of bridge lumber a knot board a nature exhibit flags and canned fruit. Lumber belonged to the County knot-board and flags to Bethel Boy Scout troop and canned goods to the Grange exhibits.

Definite Progress On Main Street Project

Mayor J M Wison reports progress on the Main Street project with State Board of Health approval and conditional Highway Department approval. Work proceeds from the Batavia WPA office and officials expect definite start within two weeks as it is a Federal Aid proposition and will not be advertised.

County Base Ball Race Narrowed To Four Competitors

Clermont County baseball race narrows to four after Newtonsville and Goshen eliminated. Amelia defeats Mt. Orab 10 to 9, piling up 18 hits as Moser struggles and Bailey reliefs. Batavia defeats Newtonsville 11 to 1, Pence the winner, while Bethel beats Goshen 10 to 3. Batavia top standings with six wins zero losses. Bethel and Amelia tied for second with five and one. Mt. Orab has eight wins, two losses. Next Sunday games: Amelia at Batavia and Mt. Orab at Bethel.

Grand Jury indicts numerous defendants in Clermont County

Clermont County Grand Jury reported after a two and a half day session they examined 30 witnesses in 14 cases and returned 11 true bills. Indictments include Jack Russel Hamer for auto theft Earl Garman for driving while intoxicated Ward Mercer Charles Harley John Hall James Brown for burglary Joshua Cole for manslaughter Delmar Rooks for forgery Albert N. Hohneck for driving without owner consent William Kemper for issuing bad checks Samuel Curliss for assault and battery Paul Gros for two counts.

Batavia 125th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend

Batavia marks its 125th anniversary with a Friday program at Batavia Armory and Batavia High School Auditorium featuring Bataviana and a homecoming dance. Saturday offers a street parade, a homecoming program, a school grounds picnic, and a free historical pageant at the School Auditorium. Sunday hosts Union Church services at the School House Auditorium with a homecoming sermon by E. L. Smith.

Robert Beightler announced a federal road project near Batavia with a $50 563 96 estimate. J C O Connor & Sons of Fort Wayne Indiana won the bid at 47 650 36 subject to federal approval. Completion set for July 31 1940 as board of elections files petitions for November office seekers.

Real estate tax collections for the last half of 1988 reached 178 185 dollars, with August 5 completion and September distributions in progress. First half year receipts stood at 197 882 46 dollars, totaling 371 174 6 for the year, compared with 428 685 92 in 1988 and 371 501 67 in 1987.

Batavia Plans Three Day Homecoming 125th Anniversary

Preparations for Batavia Homecoming mark the 125th founding anniversary with a Friday 7 PM start at Bata via Armory. Exhibits titled Bataviana feature the village plat and surveying instruments, with Garden Club floral displays and artifacts from local clubs. A parade and period dances follow, including Indian Dance by Boy Scouts and a Jitter Bug contest.

Announcement says Mt Carmel Glen Este school will open Monday September 18 for the regular term. Construction delays delayed the date but this week set. The opening day includes registration and classes on schedule with bus routes unchanged from last year.

Batavia and Amelia meet in Sunday ball clash

Batavia marks its 12th anniversary with a Sunday ball game at the local school grounds against Amelia. Clermont county clubs headline the matchup after a courthouse drawing pitted the teams. The field is in good condition and new bleachers boost fan turnout.

No Contagious Disease in Clermont County

Clermont County reports no contagious disease cases currently. Health Commissioner Dr. J. A. Carter says the county is free of communicable diseases for the first time in years and notes the removal of the last quarantine signs. Typhoid fever has not been reported this summer, a contrast to five cases in 1988, attributed to improved home sanitation.

New Jail Opens for Public Inspection Saturday

The county's ultra modern jail, nearing completion, will be opened for public inspection on Saturday during the County Seat's 125th Anniversary Celebration. Prisoner use is a week or more away as a few minor jobs remain to finish the building.

Husband jailed after assault on wife and child

Harry Beebe of New Richmond was jailed 10 days in Justice J. W. Wageal's court Tuesday night on a charge of assault and battery. The assault occurred Tuesday morning when Beebe, locked out of his house, gained admittance and severely beat his wife Lillie and the child.
