Quincy Hobbs of Halington pleaded guilty to issuing a check on Bethel Bank without funds. Sheriff and deputy witnessed proceedings, Mayor Ross imposed a $100 fine and 60 day workhouse sentence suspended on leaving the county. Hobbs later paid fines totaling about $800 and agreed to depart the state.
Batavia enforces new traffic laws with Marshal M. Long on duty. He arrested Joseph Cincentara of Cincinnati last Thursday for failing to stay on the right of the pedestal at the courthouse corner. Cincentara fined $2 and costs. Stay to the right to avoid accidents. obedience protects all.
Batavia public schools will open Monday September 10 at 8:30. James M Patchell will teach sciences and manual training replacing C W Brown. Miss Daisy Ely will lead the special class for retarded pupils, not for mentally defective students. Voters face two questions on the fall ballot two board members and a three mill levy.
Sheriff Brand of Warren county and State Deputy Harold Balser raided Simon Hodson’s farm on Carmage pike near Loveland last week and found a 200 gallon still operating. Johnson lay in front of the still watching. Hodson and Johnson were arrested and pleaded guilty before Mayor Little. About 80 gallons of moonshine and 21 barrels of mash were seized. Each defendant faced a $1000 fine or jail in Warren county. Hodson, who lives in Cincinnati, had been fined $1500 the prior year after a prior raid on the same farm.
Secretary Brown directed election board clerks statewide to ship poll books to Columbus to form a mailing list for referendum copies. Without this, notices would appear in newspapers. Mr. Collis Jordan of Ft Thomas invited Batavia friends on Saturday.
Surveyor Brown of Williamsburg assumes duties Monday and handles year end contracts. Chas Miller resumes private practice. Mrs RB Gilmore visits her parents Mr and Mrs Nichols.
Clermont county commissioners and the State Highway Commissioner at Columbus have clashed over Pike construction. At a special meeting on August 27 the board forwarded a resolution asking the highway department to sell Sec 1 of the Ohio River road and two other segments, survey four miles of No 494, issue bonds for four more miles, and proceed with the Ohio River road project. The board says the people want the good road plan advanced.

C W Montgomery of the Farm Management Department at Ohio Experiment Station says silage stays good if the silo is airtight and moist. Tighten silo hoops before filling, then loosen slightly after to allow swelling. Distribute and pack the silage firmly to exclude air, and add water when material is too dry.
Lexington Ky August 24 200 Indiana tobacco growers who failed to deliver tobacco to the Burley Tobacco Growers Co operative Association will be sued next week in Switzerland county with Judge F W Griffith and in Jefferson county with Judge J P Kear aiding prosecutors. The action follows state legal review after a vetoed cooperative marketing act and aims to recover five cents per pound damages. Similar suits are planned in Ohio pending evidence. none yet filed in Clermont county.
Local soldiers from across the county attended an initiation of several candidates into the 40 and 8 lodge in Batavia last Friday night. They were taken on a street ride singing before returning to the armory for the proceedings. Frank Davis and his wife and son of Washington D. C. are visiting his parents.
A lightning storm struck John Hartman’s home above Batavia two weeks ago causing extensive damage. The chimney was blown off, a pantry fire damaged cooking utensils, and the son was knocked unconscious. All vessels and furniture were struck, boards charred, and the house filled with burning pine odor. Hartman must reroof the damaged residence.
Veterans from Hamilton Butler Warren Clermont Brown counties invited to a September 12 gathering in Milford from 10 a m to 8 pm with park services a relief corps dinner and speeches by D M Hall Wilder and W S Mathews. Daylight campfire will feature speakers from various wars and music. Program promised to run on time.
Highland county's Geo L Evans tops the ten pig litter with a 297 pound average gain per pig after weighing at 180 days. The 2,970 pound litter surpasses the previous world record of 276.4 pounds per pig, with the largest pig at 317 pounds and the dam producing 80 pigs in eight litters.

The Batavia Village Board of Education won an injunction against Clermont County Board of Education and Auditor Eveland. Ed Ross provided his own transport, billed Batavia board, was paid by Clermont board, deemed illegal without a contract. The ruling requires recovery of funds paid to Ross. Attorney Norman L. Burnet led the Batavia suit.
The deep gutter at Leonard corner on Main street Batavia has been replaced with a concrete culvert to carry water. A new concrete crossing connects Leonard corner to the Hulick property. The improvement eases travel toward Williamsburg corner and helps visitors navigate the town. Henry and Alva Brookbank of Champaign are guests of Jacob Friend in West Batavia.
